It is based on the author's real adventures public speaking in foreign venues in which audiences understand the English language.
Imagine, for example, you are skilled and experienced at presenting Customer Service speeches and breakout sessions. And you are booked to present a customer service main stage program for Banko de Credito, one of Peru's major banks. You are to present to their front line supervisors in Lima.
In accord with trade custom, you receive 50% of your substantial fee in front, including your air travel, as a condition of your committing to this gig.
1. YOUR FLIGHT TO PERU
Envision you booking your flight on American Airlines from Miami to Lima. You easily use your AA miles to bump yourself up to First Class. You allow yourself an extra 3 days because you want to visit Machu Picchu while you are in Peru.
As always with foreign destinations you arrive a day early so you'll be well rested before you go on. You get a flight from your hometown to Miami in time to catch your Miami-Peru connection. Your AA flight leaves Miami just before midnight and gets you to Lima, non-stop, next morning by about 6 AM local time. Since you're in the front cabin you are served a delicious dinner with wines before you drop off to sleep and then a fine breakfast before you land.
2. YOUR HOTEL
You are to present in the main ballroom of the Sheraton Hotel, Lima's only five-star hotel. You request and get an upgrade to one of the Tower sleeping rooms. They feature fine furnishings, elegant wood floors and astounding views over Lima.
3. LIMA'S CUISINE
After you check in, you nap for most of the morning. For an exquisite luncheon you take a cab to El Bolivariano. There you enjoy the Peruvian specialty aroz con pato (rice with duck) followed by seco do cabrito (stewed goat).
4. SEEING THE HISTORIC SIGHTS
Now you decide to take in Lima's historic sights. You first go to Lima's historic 16th century Cathedral with its elegantly carved choir stalls and huge painting gallery. Wherever your eyes turn you see exquisite architecture and the indigenous balconies, a trademark of Peruvian architecture.
Then it's the Museo Nacional de Arqueologia. You are awed by artifacts of Peru's succession of ancient cultures. Then you walk the Lima Riverfront and visit Palacio Osamblea with its fabulous five balconies.
5. EXPERIENCING PERU'S CHINATOWN
Now you're ready for dinner at one of the largest Chinatowns in South America. There you savor chifa (Chinese-Peruvian cuisine). You choose Salon Capon where you are served Langostinos Szechwan (shrimp with aji) and Chuleta Kin Tou (grilled sweet pork).
You ask yourself, "Is this really happening? Is it happening to me? With all expenses paid, plus my speaking fee!" (Dear reader, I've lived this life for 25 years. It's both culturally enriching and unforgettable.)
6. YOUR PROGRAMS
Next morning you speak in the big room. You are beautifully received by your audience. From the main stage you dispense what-to's and principles mingled with entertaining stories only you can tell because you have lived each story. That afternoon you present a breakout session for those who desire the how-to's. Plus more of your personal stories.
7. YOUR DINNER AT PERU'S BEST RESTAURANT
For dinner you are invited by the Managing Director of Banko do Credito.
He takes you to Astrid y Gaston, regarded as Peru's best restaurant. Dinner starts with aguaymanto sour. This is made with pisco puro and the juice of the aguaymanto fruit. You are then served kid basted in algarroba honey. Delicious beyond belief. You have never experienced this unforgettable regional specialty until now.
You go to sleep early because very early next morning you are to take the bus to one of the wonders of the world, Machu Picchu.
8. MACHU PICCHU
Words are inadequate here. The sweep and majesty of the architecture defies description. To call this experience awesome is to understate. There is not a stone out of place. The terraces, gardens, temples, staircases and aqueducts are breathtaking. All have purpose and grace.
Archeologists do not know why or when it was built. It is a riddle, a blank slate. It is, above all, memorably inspiring.
You stay at nearby Aguas Caliente. From there you hike to Huayno Picchu, the Temple of the Moon, and the Inca Bridge. Having walked these paths and seen these wonders, you know your life is forever enriched.
When, speaking fee in hand, you board your flight to Miami and then your continuing flight home, you promise yourself that someday you'll return.
9. BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE . . .
As a paid speaker you live a life lesser mortals can only dream of. Far more that the adventure and the travel is the enhanced life you're now empowered to live.

11. SEND YOUR KIDS TO PRIVATE SCHOOL
When my sons were 2 and 4 respectively I enrolled them in Miss Buckley's School in the Sherman Oaks hills.
Picture you enrolling your beloved children in an upscale private school, gifting them with a superior education, seeing them groomed for professional success. Even a modestly successful speaker can do this, including you.
12. LIVE IN A NICER ENVIRONMENT
Some years ago I easily bought and loved living in an upscale ocean view home on Sunset Mesa in Malibu. It's nice to have affluent neighbors. They dress better, tend to be more gentle and polite than the good folks down on the flats below.
Envision you upgrading yourself and your loved ones to the upscale neighborhood of your town. Or maybe to a golf resort or a tennis resort or college town of your choice. You can do this easily when you are modestly successful speaker or seminar leader.
13. WEAR THE BEST
And ha'bout the clothes you and your loved one wear. It can be upscaled a couple notches easily. I'll never forget the first time I strolled into Carroll & Co. on Canon Drive in Beverly Hills. I easily paid $2000 for a suit. What a feeling!
Imagine you easily doing this in the best shop in town. Your loved one, too! When you bring home the bread from a gig or two, there's nothing to it.
14. DINE AT UPSCALE BISTROS
I have dined in some of the top eateries in Ireland, U.K., Australia, New Zealand, and all over Canada and the U.S. For example I'll never forget dining at the 21 Club in NYC. Another time I remember taking my Inner Circle Member, David Price, then the president of NSAA (National Speakers Association of Australia) to dinner. At the next table was Zig Ziglar and the redhead. Dining out becomes a wondrous experience: Fancy you taking your significant other to the finest restaurants. And not having to glance at the right side of the menu.
15. ENJOY EXOTIC PERSONAL TRAVEL
See you able to pick up and go where your whims take you. Staying in the locale of your choice whether at the beach or in the snow or wherever your fantasies lead you. It's so nice and there's nothing to it when you're a modestly successful speaker.
16. WHERE THE RUBBER MEETS THE ROAD
All this and more is at hand for you and your loved ones now. And dreaming won't make it happen. Are you going to sit back and do nothing . . . or are you going to get your hand in and get your share? You've gotta get your butt off the couch and take action.
