The first day of school is the time-marker of youth. Our years so far are measured from fall to spring. Mary Ruefle?s essay ?I Remember, I Remember? is a catalog of other such moments throughout her youth?intellectual, emotional, physical touchstones that compound to tell the story of an entire life.
For a good cry (maybe the first day of school hasn?t quite pushed you over the edge), read ?I Remember, I Remember? which begins, ?I remember being so young I thought all artists were famous.? If to be famous is to be universally recognized, Reufle is famous. One finds a reflection of his self even in the most personal of her writing.
Better than reading Ruefle is to listen and to watch her. Ruefle is visiting the Lillian Vernon Creative Writing House at 7:00 PM this evening. She will be speaking with Alice Quinn, poet and former poetry editor of the New Yorker, as part of the New Salon: Poets in Conversation series.
Ruefle?s latest pursuits are not poems, at least in form, but lectures and, as mentioned, essays. Her latest book, Madness, Rack and Honey,?a compilation of lectures as spoken to graduate students, was published by Wave Books (supplier of great literature and many a NYU professor).
As Ruefle writes in ?I Remember, I Remember? one of two essays that recently won her the Editor?s Prize for Featured Article from Poetry Magazine:
I remember liking the reading.
I remember being young and liking everything.
I remember liking a great many readings that, if I were to sit through them now, I would not like.
So see this reading while you?re still young, measuring time in semesters and paper deadlines. Run to see Ruefle this evening before the ink from your syllabi has disappeared from your fingers, while you?re still young and like everything.
