Ron Rivera has won a third season as head coach for the Carolina Panthers, but the team itself -- and the coaches Rivera has picked to back him up -- have not fared nearly as well. An article by NBC Sports writer Darin Gantt questions whether Rivera's record of finding scapegoats for the team's underwhelming performance might be among his strongest attributes.

Reports surfaced earlier this week that three more of the Charlotte-based NFL team's assistant coaches have been let go. Counting the most recent firings of running backs coach John Settle, wide receivers coach Fred Graves and linebackers coach Warren Belin, the Panthers have seen five of Rivera's own picks come and go, according to the post.

And don't forget to add to that the mid-season ousting of the team's general manager, Marty Hurney. The team announced Wednesday that Hurney was replaced by Dave Gettleman, former senior pro personnel analyst for the New York Giants.

Gantt writes that the Panthers' problem lies in the allocation of resources by owner Jerry Richardson and, more important, the absence of an overall game plan.
