The Philadelphia Eagles announced today the hiring of Oregon head coach Chip Kelly to the same position with the NFL team. It appeared last week that Kelly would be returning to Oregon, but he apparently had a change of heart, agreeing to head east to be the 21st coach in Eagles history.
The Philadelphia Eagles hired the 21st head coach in franchise history today, annoucing that Oregon head coach Chip Kelly had agreed to join the NFL franchise. Last week, Kelly had removed himself from all NFL coaching position consideration, istead returning to Oregon for the next season. Apparently, that has all now changed.
The Eagles and Kelly met for nine hours after Oregon's victory over Kansas State i the Fiesta Bowl, and it looked like both sides would come to an agreement. Then Kelly, who was described by mtuliple sources as indecisive in NFL interviews this offseason, mader the anouncement of heading back to Oregon. Today, the Eagles landed their number one choice, somehow getting him to reconsider their offer.
"Chip Kelly will be an outstanding head coach for the Eagles," Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie stated today. "He has a brilliant football mind. He motivates his team with his actions as well as his words. He will be a great leader for us, and will bring a fresh, energetic approach to our team."
In four seasons with Oregon, Kelly was 46-7, winning the PAC-10/12 coference every year, and wins in the Rose Bowl and Fiesta Bowl. Oregon has been rannked in the top five at the end of every season since 2009.
Along with the hiring of Kelly in Philadelphia, former Denver Broncos offensive coordiator Mike McCoy, who was interviewed last year by the Miami Dolphins, was annouced as the new San Diego Chargers head coach, and the Chicago Bears have announced former CFL Motreal Alouettes head coach Marc Trestman to be their new head man.
