Former Ute QB new head coach for Chargers

SAN DIEGO ? Many Utah fans remember the back-to-back 34-31 wins over BYU in 1993-94.

Nearly two decades later, the quarterback for the second of those Utes teams is now a head coach in the NFL.

Former University of Utah quarterback Mike McCoy has been named the new head coach for the San Diego Chargers, replacing Norv Turner. Turner was fired after the Chargers missed the playoffs for the third straight season.

The 40-year-old McCoy has been the offensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos since 2009, recently winning two straight AFC West titles. In those short four years he raised Kyle Orton out of obscurity, re-tailored Denver's offense for Tim Tebow in 2011, and coached Peyton Manning into an MVP candidate in 2012.

McCoy will be going to work again with a struggling quarterback, looking to rebuild the Chargers into a playoff contender with Phillip Rivers at the helm.

As a collegiate quarterback, McCoy began his career at Long Beach State, but after the school discontinued its football program (sound familiar? Think Jon Hays), McCoy transferred to the University of Utah.

One of McCoy's most memorable performances came in 1994 against rival BYU. McCoy completed 18 of 29 throws for 247 yards and four TDs to give Utah its second consecutive victory over the Cougars, 34-31.
