Sandy Stimulus? Don't bet on it. - The Term Sheet: Fortune's deals ...

By Anne VanderMey, reporter

The remains of scaffolding from above a Starbucks in lower Manhattan.

FORTUNE -- There are economic losers and winners after any natural disaster. This week, restaurants, movie theaters, airlines, and department stores will lose billions as Hurricane Sandy leaves millions without power and access to transportation.

Home Depot (HD), on the other hand, is likely to see a bumper quarter, providing generators and heavy-duty flashlights to many of the estimated 60 million people hit by the storm.

But whether the economy as a whole wins or loses is up for debate. Some analysts are arguing that Sandy could act as a kind of grisly stimulus package, mostly thanks to the billions of dollars that will be spent repairing flood and wind damage. The idea isn't totally out there: unemployment in post-Katrina New Orleans actually fell in the aftermath of the storm. And some academics say that reconstruction after storms in well-prepared areas can boost the economy.

But storms in general, and this one in particular, rarely deliver the kind of stimulus Keynesians are hoping for this week.

One-off catastrophes tend to have a negligible long-term effect on the larger economy, positive or negative, even when there is a tragic human cost. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, while regional unemployment dipped, national GDP growth slowed, if only slightly, says Erwann Michel-Kerjan, co-director of the Wharton Risk Management and Decision Processes Center. Sandy, orders of magnitude smaller, will hardly register on the national radar.

MORE:?Why the NYSE flip-flopped on electronic trading

Regionally, there's reason to be bearish on Sandy. Conservative estimates of the storm's cost from risk management firm Eqecat range from $10 billion (about what 2011's Hurricane Irene cost) to $20 billion (closer to what Hurricane Ike in 2008 cost). Michel-Kerjan says that some 60% of those costs will likely come from lost business. That's a reversal from past natural disasters, where some 40% of the cost has typically come from lost businesses, with the rest coming from damaged property. Sandy is different, Michel-Kerjan says, because it has shut down several major population centers for an extended period of time and, unlike Hurricane Irene, it hit during the workweek.

The result? Billions in lost revenue. And unlike the bills for repairing property damage, which benefit other parts of the economy, much of the lost business revenue will never be recouped. Take Starbucks (SBUX), which closed its New York stores during the storm. "You're not going to go out and buy twice as much coffee on Wednesday [when the storm lets up]," says Evan Gold, a senior vice president at weather consulting firm Planalytics.

Some of the costs will be transferred to other businesses. For example, Outback Steakhouse's loss could be Kroger's (KR) gain. But that's a zero-sum game for the economy, or worse, if consumers don't spend as much on the meal. "People are shifting and changing, but in many cases they lose out on an opportunity to do something," Gold says. That's especially meaningful just before the holiday season. Says Gold: "Macy's is not going to get days like this back. It's November. Every day counts."

Along with Macy's (M), apparel companies like Gap (GPS) and J. Crew are also in for a hit. Others losers include jewelry retailers, casual restaurants, and entertainment destinations, like movie theaters, casinos and theme parks, according to Planalytics. For just about all major retailers, at least 10% of their locations will be affected by the storm. For some, it's higher. BJ's has 54% of its stores in Sandy's path, Macy's has 25%, Sears (SHLD) has 19%, and Target (TGT) has 16%.

Not everyone is a post-Sandy business loser, though. Wal-Mart (WMT), Target, and Safe Way (SWY) will likely get a bump. Drugstores could also get a boost, as people stock up on prescriptions, along with quick-service restaurants like McDonald's (MCD),?particularly those locations along evacuation routes.

Some individual products will see an uptick. Planalytics predicts that consumer demand for bagged ice in Boston will rise 133% between Oct. 27 and November 1. Demand for dehumidifiers in New York could rise 111%. And demand for rain gear in Cleveland is projected to increase by 91%. On Amazon (AMZN), the sales rank of solar-powered and hand-cranked smartphone chargers soared over the weekend.

Gold says that grocery stores are often not affected by storms, despite the must-talked-about runs on bottled water. Lost foot traffic and reduced sales afterward usually cancel out the initial gains.

MORE:?U.S. markets will stay closed

With flood levels reaching four or five feet in some cities, the total property damage bills are likely to be vast. Eqecat predicts that insurance will cover about half of the total cost of the storm (though that figure is less of a boon for a region that's also home to the bulk of the country's insurance companies). Government aid, too, will provide some lift to battered homeowners and businesses. In recent history, public officials have occasionally taken a no-holds-barred approach to reviving growth, providing low-interest loans and credit for post-disaster home repair. But there are a few reasons that may not be the case this time.

Howard Kunreuther, another co-director at Wharton's risk management center, has studied government assistance to affected areas post-crisis, and says that, this year, policymakers may feel pressure to keep payouts low in light of mounting government debt. Another wildcard: Kunreuther's research shows that disasters before an election draw more government relief than disasters after an election. He notes that, at the moment, politicians are vowing to rush to the region's aid. Kunreuther is doubtful, though, that Congress will be able to make a move before the Nov. 6 elections.

Still, there may yet be a silver lining for the economy. The storm could prompt an increase in spending on weather-ready buildings and infrastructure in preparation for future disasters. Those types of investments could lift the economy more than post-crisis repairs -- and are more likely to actually save lives. "Spending before the disaster is really where you have the best return on investment," says Wharton's Michel-Kerjan. The challenge is generating enthusiasm in the absence of a calamity. "No one wants to go to Wal-Mart if there's not a hurricane on the news," he said.

Michel-Kerjan projects the costs to sufficiently storm-proof the entire United States would be in the trillions of dollars. By comparison, the potential costs and profits from a storm like Sandy look like a rounding error. Stimulus, indeed.

Zen Meditation - Health - MensJournal.com

Zen Meditation

There are many meditation practices out there, each teaching different methods for controlling the mind. If, like many of us, you are a type A, plan-ahead, workaholic, then the idea of shutting out unwanted thoughts may seem not only intimidating, but also undesirable or impossible. The good news is that there is a type of meditation that works well for your disposition. As long as you maintain the physical posture of the practice, you are doing it right, no matter what your mind is thinking. It also happens to be one of the most popular traditions: Zen.

Zen helps you become intimate with what the mind is doing, whether it's planning your promotion, indulging in a fantasy, or feeling ashamed of a recently made stupid remark. Daily practice decreases stress levels, improves the immune system, and notably heightens concentration. Yes, it's really good for you.

To help get you started with Zen meditation, we suggest Shunryu Suzuki's "Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind." Published in 1970, this slim volume is a compilation of the famous Zen master's most cherished talks. Clear, rational, and beautifully simple, Suzuki walks you through zazen, or, Zen sitting meditation, without leaving any excuse to wiggle out.

At its root , Zen focuses on the form of the body. Our thoughts ripple through us constantly, defining how we look at the world and how we feel in each moment, but Suzuki asserts that simply sitting in the Zen posture allows the practitioner to recognize them for what they are, like seeing waves on water. Zen isn't about rationalizing your way to freedom, but about training you to experientially identify the nature of your mind, about training you to see the rippling of these thoughts the way you might see the curves of a sculpture or the texture of a painting. With practice, you can literally see yourself planning your to-do list as if you are watching a movie. Of course, explaining the experience of this is challenging, and is best understood through practice.

Sit cross-legged with a straight body, "as if you are supporting the sky with your head," Suzuki writes. With half-lidded eyes, focus on a point on the ground eight feet in front of you. Lay your left hand, palm up, on top of your right palm. Allow the thumbs to meet, forming an oval shape with the hands. Hold that shape a few inches out in front of your navel. Simply maintain this posture, while paying attention to the air entering and exiting your nose. If it is noisy outside your apartment, or if something is distracting you, recognize your frustration, and return your attention to your posture and breath. Start with eight minutes of sitting every day. Each week add one or two more minutes until you're sitting at least 20 minutes a day.

The best time to meditate is in the morning, right after you wake up. Getting out of bed 20 minutes early to meditate will change the way you approach your day, leaving you calm and composed to take on whatever comes your way. You don't need to become a Buddhist, or radically alter your lifestyle. The goal is for meditation to become "no big deal," for it to become a practice like brushing your teeth, ? that is, until you realize that there is no difference between your teeth and the brush.

We live our lives within our media, rather than simply with it, expert says

ScienceDaily (Oct. 29, 2012) ? With the introduction of every new multimedia device, such as handheld computers, smartphones, social media channels and game systems, pundits and researchers alike offer views on how using them increasingly affects our everyday life.

But to Indiana University professor Mark Deuze, they are another opportunity to discuss how we live our lives within this media, rather than simply with it.

"If anything, today the uses and appropriations of media can be seen as fused with everything people do, everywhere people are, everyone people aspire to be," Deuze wrote in the overview of his new book, "Media Life" (Cambridge Polity Books), which explores the interconnected and essential role of media in our daily lives.

"There is no external to media life -- whatever we perceive as escape hatch, passage out or potential Delete key is just an illusion. In fact, we can only imagine a life outside media," added Deuze, an associate professor of telecommunications in IU's College of Arts and Sciences.

"Media are to us as water is to fish. This does not mean life is determined by media -- it just suggests that whether we like it or not, every aspect of our lives takes place in media."

Any parent who has a teenager with a mobile phone will appreciate Deuze's hypothesis.

The IU professor's position runs counter to what many others in his field of media and communications research think: that the media and its related devices have an effect on us and that the more we use them, the more they shape our lives.

"After years of teaching about this, I began to realize that there might be something fundamentally flawed about all of these assumptions, in the sense that they're all based on the premise that we can control media," he said in an interview.

In "Media Life," Deuze set out to challenge these assumptions and examine how our lives are changing in a world where the divides between channels and content and between interpersonal and mediated communication are melting away.

A reference counterpoint for the book was Sherry Turkle's 2011 best-seller, "Alone Together: Why We Expect More From Technology and Less From Each Other." Where Turkle keeps humans and their machines apart and thus signals the increased intimacy between them with worry, Deuze suggests that our closeness to technologies helps to reveal the interdependency of all of us -- including the planet and our technologies.

"What we do in media has magical qualities," he says, "because we can see each other and ourselves live. This kind of visibility should make us aware of our shared social responsibility."

For his research, Deuze considered the ways in which people live in media around the world -- from the United States to his home country, The Netherlands, and from South Africa to Hong Kong. He studied the role of mobile phones in developing nations as well as the developed world's current obsession with Internet-enabled HDTVs.

At the heart of Deuze's project was answering the question of "what a good, passionate, beautiful and socially responsible media life looks like."

"In terms of what media communicate, it is tempting to point to governments, companies and corporations for pushing an unrelenting, ever-accelerating stream of content and experiences into our lives," he said. "However, most mediated communication comprises work done by you and me: through our endless texts, chats and emails, with our phone calls from anywhere at any time, and through our online social networks that function as the living archives of social reality.

"With the majority of the world population owning a mobile phone, telecommunication networks spanning almost every inch of the globe, sales figures of any and all media devices growing steadily worldwide, time spent with media up every year, and any and all media by default integrated into an always-on real-time live mode of being, an almost complete mediatization of society seems a somewhat self-evident observation."

Rather than our being "addicted" to our tablets, mobile phones and video game players, Deuze said we have a "profoundly emotional relationship that we have with our media and through our media with other people."

Deuze doesn't believe this is a new phenomenon created by the Internet, drawing parallels between prehistoric cave paintings and Facebook's "wall."

"It's like cave paintings; what are we painting on the wall -- stories about who we are, where do we belong and what really matters to the community that we think we are a part of -- that's the definition of every status update," he said. "Nothing that we're doing now is new, it's just that it is more visible and everybody participates in it. It used to be that only a privileged few could paint the walls of the cave; now we're all doing it."

In the book's final chapter, Deuze brings together all of the elements of his exploration of life as lived in the media through the diagnosis of a Truman Show Delusion. North American psychologists Joel and Ian Gold have suggested that classical syndromes such as narcissism and paranoia, in combination with pervasive information technologies that blur the boundaries between the physical and virtual worlds, have produced new kinds of psychoses.

"In media life, the world can certainly seem like a television studio as in the 'Truman Show' movie, with the significant difference that there is no exit," Deuze said. "The question is therefore not how to avoid or destroy the media in our lives -- we should rather investigate what Truman Burbank (the Jim Carrey character) could do if he decided to stay inside of his fully mediated life.

"As with Truman, we do not just have to perform for the cameras -- the cameras can also perform for us. Whether we like it or not, I think we are slowly but surely becoming information players and creators rather than simply those who are expected to work with the information that is given to us. We can indeed create art with life. In media, that is."

Deuze also addresses these issues through his blog. His previous book, "Media Work" (Cambridge: Polity Press, 2007), focused on people working with various forms of media worldwide. He collaborated with Dutch artist Miek van Dongen on illustrations in "Media Life," which were exhibited earlier this fall at IU's Grunwald Gallery.

PFT: Peyton better than ever? |? Saints' D stinks

Indianapolis Colts v Tennessee TitansGetty Images

The Colts kept veteran wide receiver Reggie Wayne for many reasons, primarily to give rookie quarterback Andrew Luck a reliable target.

But Wayne added extra value Sunday, by giving his young teammates a talking-to at halftime of their 19-13 overtime win over the Titans.

Down 10-3 at the half, Wayne had seen enough.

?Sometimes you have to do more than lead by example,? Wayne said, via Mike Chappell of the Indianapolis Star.

?I was [upset],? Wayne said. ?There was no false enthusiasm on this one. I was [upset] because I knew what we were capable of. We should have had a lead at halftime and we were behind.

?I felt like we needed a little fire. I had to speak up.?

It must have helped, because the Colts won their first road game since December 2010, by locking down the Titans and cutting out the mistakes that plagued them in the first half.

?Reggie told us to look at everybody and see if we wanted to fight for each other,? center Samson Satele said. ?It just fired everybody up. I was looking around and thinking, ?I don?t want to leave here with a loss.?

?Not after that speech Reggie just gave.?

Wayne and the Colts are in an interesting spot. While they were generally considered on the upswing, they?re sitting at 4-3 at the moment, level with the other wild card-level teams. They?re two games behind the Texans for the division lead, and no one thinks they?re catching up.

But no one thought they?d still be in playoff contention, either.

Maybe no one but Wayne, anyway.

Cyprus police: hit on attorney general foiled

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) ? Three men including a "paranoid" convicted felon allegedly plotted to assassinate the country's attorney general using an anti-tank weapon, a police investigator told a court on Monday.

The court granted a police request to keep the three suspects in police custody for eight days until investigators build their case against them. The suspected ringleader is 61-year-old Andreas Ounoufriou, who was sentenced to 18 years in prison for the 1996 attempted murder of a judge. The trio faces charges of conspiracy to commit murder and possession of military-grade explosives, a missile launcher and other weapons.

Police investigator Ioannis Georgadjis told a Nicosia District Court that Ounoufriou allegedly masterminded the foiled killing of attorney general Petros Clerides from behind bars a few months before he was due to be released from a four-year sentence for an earlier prison escape. Ounoufriou, believed to harbor intense hatred for Clerides and other figures of authority, allegedly recruited the other two men, aged 39 and 52, to help him carry out his plan.

Georgadjis said Ounoufriou planned the hit in prison so that he could argue that he couldn't have been involved because he was still behind bars. Under cross examination, the police investigator didn't disclose anything more about Ounoufriou's possible motivation, saying that the investigation was ongoing.

According to the investigator, an informer tipped off police about the plot earlier this month and the suspects were placed under surveillance. The killing was allegedly planned for Oct. 28 near Clerides' home, using the Turkish-made light anti-tank weapon.

The suspects were arrested on the night of the alleged hit in a police sting after the suspected triggerman went to pick up the rocket launcher from a man working for law enforcement. Police had earlier tracked down the rocket launcher to where it lay hidden, and switched it with another without the explosive warhead.

Ounoufriou, who spoke in his own defense during the court hearing, dismissed the allegations as a "fabrication" by another convicted felon who concocted the story so he could negotiate his release from prison.

Cyprus Police Chief Michalis Papageorgiou said police have information that the suspects had also marked another individual for assassination and that more people may have been on a 'hit list' which investigators are trying to verify.

Georgadjis told the court that it was necessary for the suspects to remain in custody because police believe they would either flee abroad or try to influence witnesses.

McIlroy beats Woods in China exhibition

(AP) ? Rory McIlroy shot a 5-under 67 to beat Tiger Woods by one stroke in a head-to-head, 18-hole exhibition match between the world's two top-ranked golfers at the Jinsha Lake Golf Club in central China on Monday.

McIlroy, the World No. 1, took an early lead with two birdies on the first three holes and held on to beat Woods, who had two bogeys to go along with his six birdies for the day. The 14-time major winner finished with a 68.

Both players had to make long journeys to Zhengzhou, an industrial city in China's Henan province, after competing elsewhere on Sunday. McIlroy finished second to Peter Hanson in the European Tour's BMW Masters at Shanghai, while Woods tied for fourth in the PGA Tour's CIMB Classic in Malaysia.

The 18-hole medal-match, dubbed "Duel at Jinsha Lake," marked the first time the two golfers had played head-to-head without other competitors.

Mastering weight-maintenance skills before embarking on diet helps women avoid backsliding

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Would you take part in a weight-loss program in which you were explicitly asked not to lose any weight for the first eight weeks?

Although the approach sounds counterintuitive, a study from researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine found that women who spent eight weeks mastering weight-maintenance skills before embarking on a weight-loss program shed the same number of pounds as women who started a weight-loss program immediately. More importantly, the study showed that the "maintenance-first" women had regained only 3 pounds on average a year later, compared to the average 7-pound gain for the immediate dieters.

The study's authors say that the maintenance-first approach may offer a way to halt the cycle of yo-yo dieting.

"Those eight weeks were like a practice run. Women could try out different stability skills and work out the kinks without the pressure of worrying about how much weight they had lost," said lead author Michaela Kiernan, PhD, senior research scientist at the Stanford Prevention Research Center. "We found that waiting those eight weeks didn't make the women any less successful at losing weight. But even better, women who practiced stability first were more successful in maintaining that loss after a year."

The study was published online Oct. 31 in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology.

Obesity contributes to a variety of health problems, including heart disease and diabetes. Previous research has shown that losing 5-10 percent of your body weight can decrease the risk factors for heart disease. Yet despite the plethora of diet books and programs, many people who lose weight are unable to keep it off.

Over the years, Kiernan has interviewed both those who have succeeded and those who have failed at keeping the pounds off. She was particularly struck by one woman who said that she had never "maintained" her weight in her life; instead, she was always either losing or gaining.

"She had no sense what she was aiming for," Kiernan said. "We wanted to see if there was a way to help people get away from this all-or-nothing approach that is associated with losing weight."

Kiernan noted that weight maintenance may require a different set of skills and behaviors than those used for losing weight. So she and her colleagues came up with the idea to teach weight-maintenance skills first so that people could experience how to fine-tune their behavior in response to everyday pleasures and disruptions rather than being "on" or "off" a diet. Among these stability skills are searching out low-fat or low-calorie foods that taste as good as high-fat/high-calorie options to avoid feelings of deprivation; occasionally eating and savoring small amounts of favorite high-fat/high-calorie foods; weighing daily to see how their body weight naturally fluctuates from day to day; identifying a personalized weight-fluctuation range of about 5 pounds to account for common disruptions, such as water gain and vacations; strategically losing a few pounds before a known disruption (such as a vacation) to minimize its effects; and eating a little more when reaching the lower limit of the personalized 5-pound range.

Kiernan said the approach is designed to help people make peace with the scale and learn how to pay "relaxed attention" to their weight in ways that can be maintained over the long term -- without keeping food records.

"Losing a significant amount of weight requires a lot of focused attention to what you're doing, and most people can't keep up that intensity over the long term," Kiernan said. "For weight maintenance, we wanted something that would make the day-to-day experience positive while not requiring overwhelming amounts of effort."

For the study, 267 overweight/obese women were randomized into one of two groups. The women in the control group immediately began taking part in a 20-week behavioral weight-loss program that encouraged greater intake of vegetables and fruit, increased physical activity and use of proven dieting strategies, such as keeping daily food records. The women attended weekly 90-minute sessions with a group facilitator to learn problem-solving skills aimed at losing weight. At the end of 20 weeks, they spent eight weeks using a similar problem-solving approach to learn weight-maintenance skills.

By contrast, the women in the maintenance-first group spent the initial eight weeks learning the stability skills Kiernan's group had developed. The women were asked not to lose any weight during that time; if they did lose a few pounds, they were asked to gain them back. Kiernan said this skill mimics a more real-world approach for maintaining weight within a range of a few pounds, rather than aiming for a single number on the scale. After the eight weeks were up, the women embarked on the same 20-week weight-loss program as the women in the control group.

After both groups completed their 28-week programs, Kiernan said the results showed that the women on average lost a similar amount of weight -- about 17 pounds, or roughly 9 percent of their initial weight. Once the weekly group sessions stopped, the women were on their own for the following year.

"We scheduled the weekly sessions to end in October so that the women would have to navigate the holidays by themselves, without any guidance from the group facilitators," said Kiernan, the principal investigator for the study. "We wanted this to mirror real-life conditions as much as possible."

When the women were weighed one year later after no contact with their group facilitators, Kiernan said she and her collaborators were pleased to see that the maintenance-first women had regained only 3 pounds on average, compared to a 7-pound average gain for the control group. She added that the 3-pound gain falls squarely within the personalized range that the women were taught to use. Additionally, 33 percent of the women in the maintenance-first group displayed what the researchers categorize as a favorable pattern -- that is, losing at least 5 percent of their body weight without regaining more than 5 pounds over the course of a year -- compared with 18 percent of the women in the control group.

Kiernan said the maintenance-first approach, though sounding a bit unorthodox, could be a useful tool for those who are trying to slim down and be healthier. "This approach helps people learn how to make small, quick adjustments that can help them maintain their weight without requiring a lot of effort," she said.

In the future, she hopes to further test the approach to see if people are able to maintain the weight loss for more than a year, and would also like to test it in larger, more diverse populations including men. She also noted that the initial study did not recruit any participants who had reported binge-eating behaviors, and so researchers would need to determine whether the maintenance-first skills were viable for vulnerable subgroups of people.

Culture Brats: Our Interview With S.G. Browne

If you were a fan of 2009's Breathers: A Zombie's Lament, I've got some great news for you: its sequel, I Saw Zombies Eating Santa Claus, comes out tomorrow! And you want to know the best part? It's every bit as good as the original, equally touching and funny and satirical, with plenty of zombie action! I devoured this book in two days; I could not put it down because it was so much fun.

I was lucky enough to speak with S.G. Browne, the author of both of these great books, about the sequel, the status of the Breathers film, the popularity of zombies, and his five favorite zombie movies.

Hi Scott! How's it going today?
I'm in Del Mar visiting a close friend and getting ready to go play Smash Ball on the beach, so I'd say today is looking good.

I loved I Saw Zombies Eating Santa Claus! It is hilarious, touching, and the perfect sequel to Breathers. What made you decide to write about Andy Warner again?
I'd never planned on continuing Andy's story unless I could come up with something fresh. The last thing I wanted to do was regurgitate the same ideas from the first novel. While I had a seed of an idea for a sequel, it didn't start to germinate until my publisher asked me if I was interested in writing a Christmas themed zombie novella. Add a little water and sunshine and some zombie compost and two months later, the idea bloomed into I Saw Zombies Eating Santa Claus.

I Saw Zombies Eating Santa Claus moves from horror to comedy to emotional scenes. Which is the hardest for you to write? What comes the most natural for you?
To be honest, I don't think too much about moving from one to the other while I'm writing. The different scenes are just a part of the story and if I'm telling it honestly, then the horror and comedy and emotion all come out feeling natural. So none of them are any harder to write than the others. But I do pay attention to make sure the emotional scenes don't get too sappy. I'm a sucker for It's A Wonderful Life.

Is this the last we've seen of Andy?
More than likely. Never say never, because then you have to start making excuses like a politician, but I'm not sure there's a whole lot more I can or want to do with Andy's story. Plus I have so many other stories in me clamoring for my attention that I don't hear Andy's voice.

Have there been any discussions about the film rights for I Saw Zombies Eating Santa Claus?
Nothing so far, but you never know.

What's the current status of the Breathers movie? How involved are you in the project?
The option from Fox expired but the producers (Diablo Cody and Mason Novick) and the screenwriter (Geoff LaTulippe) are still involved, looking to attach some talent and find another interested studio. That's all I know, which is about the extent of my involvement.

If you had complete control, who would you cast as Andy and Rita in Breathers?
Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Scarlett Johansson were both interested in the roles before the rights were ever sold. I don't know if they'd still be interested but I think they would be great. Before I knew of their interest, I'd imagined either Jake Gyllenhaal or Jason Segal as Andy, with Anne Hathaway or Emily Blunt as Rita. I wouldn't kick any of them off the set.

Why are zombies so popular? What do you think that says about us?
Contrary to most pop culture "experts" who believe the popularity of zombies is a reflection of global fears and the idea of horror as catharsis for an anxious society making commentary on itself, I believe zombies are popular because they've been taken out of their proverbial archetypal box. They're no longer just the shambling, mindless, flesh-eating ghouls we've known and loved for most of the past four decades. They're faster. Funnier. Sentient. They've expanded their range, become more well-rounded. And who doesn't enjoy a well-rounded zombie?

As for what their popularity says about us, I have no idea. Let the pundits fight that one out. I'll just stick to writing stories and making fun of human beings.

What authors did you read growing up that made you want to become a writer? Were you more into satire or horror, or another genre altogether?
I didn't read much as a kid. I preferred watching television and gravitated toward horror movies and sci-fi. I loved the old black and white films, like The Crawling Eye and The Day The Earth Stood Still. Eventually when I started reading (which wasn't until college), I consumed a steady diet of Stephen King, Peter Straub, Dean Koontz, Robert McCammon, and F. Paul Wilson. King is the reason I wanted to become a writer. I didn't get into reading comedy and satire until my mid-30s, though I've always loved dark quirky films like those by Charlie Kaufman, Wes Anderson, and the Coen brothers.

What can you tell us about Big Egos? When is it being released?
Big Egos is based on my short story, "My Ego Is Bigger Than Yours," which you can find in my eBook short story collection, Shooting Monkeys In A Barrel. (Yes, that's a shameless plug.) But the gist is that about 15 years in the future there's a designer consumer product that allows you to become a dead celebrity or fictional character for 6-8 hours. It takes role-playing to the next level and deals with the concept of people always thinking they'd be happier being someone else, especially someone rich and famous. It also deals with the question of what happens to your identity if you constantly pretend to be someone you're not.

As for when it's going to be released, the last I heard was August 2013.

Final question: in no particular order, what are your five favorite zombie flicks?
Fido, Night Of The Living Dead (1968), Shaun Of The Dead, Zombie (aka Zombi 2), and Dawn Of The Dead (2004, the director's cut).

Thanks for taking the time to talk with us today! Best of luck with I Saw Zombies Eating Santa Claus!
My pleasure. Thanks for having me. And for the well wishes.

I Saw Zombies Eating Santa Claus will be released October 30, 2012.

Megastorm could wreak havoc across 800 miles of US

SHIP BOTTOM, N.J. (AP) ? Forget distinctions like tropical storm or hurricane. Don't get fixated on a particular track. Wherever it hits, the behemoth storm plodding up the East Coast will afflict a third of the country with sheets of rain, high winds and heavy snow, say officials who warned millions in coastal areas to get out of the way.

"We're looking at impact of greater than 50 to 60 million people," said Louis Uccellini, head of environmental prediction for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

As Hurricane Sandy trekked north from the Caribbean ? where it left nearly five dozen dead ? to meet two other powerful winter storms, experts said it didn't matter how strong the storm was when it hit land: The rare hybrid storm that follows will cause havoc over 800 miles from the East Coast to the Great Lakes.

Governors from North Carolina, where steady rains were whipped by gusting winds Saturday night, to Connecticut declared states of emergency. Delaware ordered mandatory evacuations for coastal communities by 8 p.m. Sunday.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who was criticized for not interrupting a vacation in Florida while a snowstorm pummeled the state in 2010, broke off campaigning for Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney in North Carolina on Friday to return home.

"I can be as cynical as anyone," said Christie, who declared a state of emergency Saturday. "But when the storm comes, if it's as bad as they're predicting, you're going to wish you weren't as cynical as you otherwise might have been."

Eighty-five-year-old former sailor Ray Leonard agreed. And he knows to heed warnings.

Leonard and two crewmates in his 32-foot sailboat, Satori, rode out 1991's infamous "perfect storm," made famous by the Sebastian Junger best-selling book of the same name, before being plucked from the Atlantic off Martha's Vineyard, Mass., by a Coast Guard helicopter.

"Don't be rash," Leonard said Saturday from his home in Fort Myers, Fla. "Because if this does hit, you're going to lose all those little things you've spent the last 20 years feeling good about."

Sandy weakened briefly to a tropical storm Saturday but was soon back up to Category 1 strength, packing 75 mph winds. It was about 260 miles (420 kilometers) south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C., and moving northeast at 13 mph as of 5 a.m. Sunday, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

The storm was expected to continue moving parallel to the Southeast coast most of the day and approach the coast of the mid-Atlantic states by Monday night, before reaching southern New England later in the week.

It was so big, however, and the convergence of the three storms so rare, that "we just can't pinpoint who is going to get the worst of it," said Rick Knabb, director of the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

Officials are particularly worried about the possibility of subway flooding in New York City, said Uccellini, of NOAA.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo told the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to prepare to shut the city's subways, buses and suburban trains. The city closed the subways before Hurricane Irene last year, and a Columbia University study predicted that an Irene surge just 1 foot higher would have paralyzed lower Manhattan.

Up and down the Eastern Seaboard and far inland, officials urged residents and businesses to prepare in ways big and small.

On Saturday evening, Amtrak began canceling train service to parts of the East Coast, including between Washington, D.C., and New York. Airlines started moving planes out of airports to avoid damage and adding Sunday flights out of New York and Washington in preparation for flight cancellations on Monday.

The Virginia National Guard was authorized to call up to 500 troops to active duty for debris removal and road-clearing, while homeowners stacked sandbags at their front doors in coastal towns.

"You never want to be too naive, but ultimately, it's not in our hands anyway," said Andrew Ferencsik, 31, as he purchased plywood and 2-by-4 lumber from a Home Depot in Lewes, Del.

Utility officials warned rains could saturate the ground, causing trees to topple into power lines, and told residents to prepare for several days at home without power.

President Barack Obama was monitoring the storm and working with state and locals governments to make sure they get the resources needed to prepare, administration officials said.

In North Carolina's Outer Banks, a group of about 20 people was forced to wait out the storm on Portsmouth Island, a former fishing village that is now uninhabited and accessible only by private ferry.

"We tried to get off the island and the ferry service shut down on us," said Bill Rowley, 49, of Rocky Mount, N.C.

Rowley said he could see 15-foot seas breaking over the island's dunes, enough to bring water to the island's interior.

"We'll be inundated and it'll probably be worse tomorrow," he said.

In New Jersey, hundreds of coastal residents started moving inland. Christie's emergency declaration will force the shutdown of Atlantic City's 12 casinos for only the fourth time in the 34-year history of legalized gambling here. City officials said they would begin evacuating the gambling hub's 30,000 residents at noon Sunday, busing them to mainland shelters and schools.

The storm also forced the presidential campaign to juggle schedules. Romney scrapped plans to campaign Sunday in Virginia and switched his schedule for the day to Ohio. First lady Michelle Obama canceled an appearance in New Hampshire for Tuesday, and Obama moved a planned Monday departure for Florida to Sunday night to beat the storm. He also canceled appearances in Northern Virginia on Monday and Colorado on Tuesday.
