Slow To Rev Up, Gifts and User Promoted Posts Generated Under $5M In Facebook Q4 Revenue

344673538_d4961faa1c_zAs Facebook looks for new ways to make money, it disclosed during its Q4 2012 earnings call today that its Gifts product and promoted user posts functionality accounted for less than $5M of Facebook’s overall revenue. In fact, these earnings were labeled as revenue “outside of games.” Payments revenue was flat, overall, in the quarter. While this isn’t the worst thing in the world, it does show that Facebook’s slow rollout at the end of last year might have hurt its overall revenue. Slowly rolling it out was the right move for users and its product’s longterm health, but it does look like Gifts didn’t get the Christmas boom that the company had hoped for. When Facebook Gifts launched, our own Josh Constine discussed how the product could eventually earn upwards of $1B annually for the company. When I’ve used the products, I noticed that it’s difficult for people to accept their gifts, especially if they’re not a hardcore Facebook user. We’re told that this is an “early product” so we expect that the user experience will get better, and there will be more types of gifts available this year. We noted that Facebook has put the emphasis on buying someone a gift over leaving a note on someone’s Timeline for their birthday, and that is in hopes of kickstarting the product. It hasn’t happened, people are tight with their wallets and purses. As far as promoted posts from users, it’s something that nobody really understood why Facebook introduced it. It seems odd to want to pay money to “promote” your status update to people who are already your friends. As Facebook’s News Feed gets harder to follow, asking people to pay $7 is a bit of a stretch. To many, this seemed like a test just to see what would happen. [Photo credit: Flickr]

Technology: Staying in touch through the years - MyHeritage.com ...

29????Jan 20131 comment

There are many ways to stay connected with our family, no matter the distance.

We write e-mails, send letters or speak on the phone. Even with Skype on our computers, many of us still have a land line phone at home to connect with our families locally and worldwide.

Hearing our families? voices brings us closer together, but how were we able to keep in touch before all these technological advances showed up in our homes?

Construction of the first regular phone line was completed in 1877. By the end of 1880, there were 47,900 telephones in the US. Since the first Bell telephone company was established in 1878, phones have evolved from the ?candlestick? telephone to rotary-dial and to today?s cordless handsets.

The telephone emerged as an improvement to the telegraph. Many credit Alexander Graham Bell with the telephone?s invention; he did patent the invention. However, others have been recognized for their contributions including Italian-American inventor Antonio Meucci, who developed a voice communication apparatus considered by many as the first telephone.

The phone?s design has changed technically and visually since the first 19th century. They have been made of wood, metal and - more commonly today - plastic.

The first model had two parts to speak and listen. In 1890, the phone evolved to the handset, with a one-piece microphone and earpiece The early 20th century rotary dial was replaced by touch-tone phones during the 1960s. By 1970, cordless phones provided a user-friendly telephone that made it possible to communicate from anywhere in our homes.

The history of cellular phones can be traced to two-way radios, but wasn't really developed until the 1960s. The first cell call was placed in 1973. Today, many of us have mobile phones, making communication with our families easier without being restricted to phoning from a specific place.

Computers have also helped with communication since the mid-1970s. With the Internet, communication via the web has increased. What is better than seeing family even if they are far away? All these great communication tools provide easy ways to stay in touch with the people we love.

With MyHeritage, there are several ways to make communication easier with our relatives. Members can send messages, create events, birthday reminders and more.

What modern communication technology tools do you use to stay in touch with your family? Before cell phones and video communication, how did you keep in touch?

The Wandering Writer: A Tour Through Washington, DC's U Street Neighborhood With NPR's Steve Inskeep

"I wanted you to meet me here because when I think about this neighborhood - the story of how it is now ? it begins here," Steve Inskeep says. "In 1968, Martin Luther King was assassinated and a lot of cities and neighborhoods burned, including this one. One of my neighbors was around at that time and he told me that the riot began here, that there was an office of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference right along here. A huge crowd gathered outside and someone threw an object through a drugstore window and the riots started."

We're standing on a loud corner at the intersection of 14th and U Street in front of the glass and brick Frank D. Reeves Municipal Center, where Inskeep is occasionally interrupted by horns and conversations and one very polite panhandler. He tells me how, after the destruction, a lot of the buildings were empty for decades. Then this government center opened and brought jobs with it.

"Restaurants started to re-open," he says. "People started to renovate houses." He gestures towards the construction cranes punctuating the cloudy day as he notes how rapidly the neighborhood continues to change.

I'm listening to his words, soaking up the fascinating history lesson, but it's also impossible not to be just a little distracted by his voice. Inskeep's well-known tenor has been seeping out of my radio every morning for over a decade. I cannot help but be briefly disoriented by the physical reality of this surprisingly tall man in khaki pants who accompanies the typically disembodied voice.

When I ask Inskeep to hold a tape recorder while we walk and talk, he happily obliges, joking that he's "held a mic once or twice before." Whenever I ask a question, he deftly shifts the device over my way, making me feel, though not at all uncomfortably, like I'm the one being interviewed.

We amble east on U Street and Inskeep tells me about how different his neighborhood was 12 years ago when he first moved in. With the help of a first-time home buyer's program, he and his wife scraped together the money to purchase a fixer-upper.

"It has the original cast iron steps, stained glass windows and wood floors," he says. "Everything else had to be redone. The plumbing had to be redone from the street in. But that's what we could afford. So we fixed it up ever so slightly and got ourselves in there. We fixed it up some more after we had our first daughter. Actually there are several guys in the basement right now..."

Back then the area was full of vacant lots and buildings.

"Even the businesses that were open would have boarded up windows like they had been boarded up since the '60s. It looked like a dead zone even if it wasn't," he says.

Now the neighborhood, like his home, is in a state of constant renovation.

We pass a gigantic apartment building called The Ellington, named after the jazz legend who grew up here, then stop to admire Lincoln Theater, built in 1922. Inskeep speaks highly of the shows offered here, from films to live performances. As with his other local favorites, he seems equally as passionate about the space as its history. He draws my attention to the venue's loving restoration as we peek inside at the gold-leaf infused d?cor.

Our next stop is neighborhood institution Ben's Chili Bowl, opened in the 1950s. Theirs is a story of endurance.

"It is said to be the only business to survive the catastrophe of this neighborhood after the '60s and into the '80s," Inskeep says. "Even after they started building the metro in here ? ripping up business ? these guys stayed open."

Bill Cosby, who attended nearby Howard University, might be called the patron saint of Ben's. For years, a sign listing folks allowed to eat for free contained only his name. Then, before his inauguration, President Obama showed up. And just like that the list doubled in size. A colorful mural coats one side of the building, Bill and Barack grinning at each other like old friends.

Inskeep points out another favorite food spot across the street: Ulah.

"My wife and I have lunch there all the time," he says. "It's a good neighborhood restaurant with a great variety of people."

Inskeep clearly thrives in diverse urban environments like D.C., telling me: "everywhere I've gone, I've been excited by the cities that I've been to." He offers Kandahar, Baghdad, Cairo, and Karachi as examples.

From abroad we find our conversational way to Hoboken, N.J. We've both resided there and I catch myself telling him about how the PATH train is finally up and running again today post Hurricane Sandy, quickly realizing, but not before the words are out of my mouth, that I'm repeating news I heard directly from him at 5:30 that very morning. Still he listens patiently, only the faintest hint of an amused smile, as I regurgitate his morning report.

As we round the corner back to 14th Street, he points out Home Rule, a trendy house wares supplier that was the only upscale store on the block when he moved in. It's been around for 14 years and was the first place opened after the riots. Now the stretch is lined with trendy new shops: an oaky wine store, a brightly lit veterinarian, a clothing boutique calling out like a Siren to my wallet.

There are few places we don't have time to see together but that Inskeep thinks are an important part of the neighborhood fabric. He urges me to walk down 13th Street to Logan Circle to see the "spectacular Victorian homes that were mostly vacant 10 or 12 years ago." Recently they've been split into multi-million dollar units.

Later I'll do just that, then head north up a hill, as he suggests, to take in Cordoza High School, a looming Gothic building under renovation like everything else around here. It's mid-afternoon by then and the majority of those I pass off the beaten U Street path are construction workers meandering home in groups, guys peeling off one at a time down side streets or at bus stops.

Over lunch, Inskeep mentions the amazing variety of people that exist together in this area. First, this was an overwhelmingly black neighborhood. Then came an influx of Hispanics, followed by white homebuyers. There was gentrification. Bars and restaurants blossomed. There are constant conflicts over what this neighborhood stands for, Inskeep tells me.

"Is it a black neighborhood? A white neighborhood? A diverse area? An entertainment district? A residential area? Is it upscale? Is it downscale? It's ended up being all of those things in the years that we've been here."

No matter what larger generalizations one might be tempted to make about this area ? like any ? it's apparent that Inskeep remains focused on the personal details of the place, just like he does in his journalism. "You don't want to be abstract," he tells me. "You want to be specific. You want to tell stories."

And he's told me some fascinating ones about this neighborhood over the last few hours ? not to mention regaled me with tales about Hurricane Katrina, Charleton Heston, Cairo, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the state of journalism, and, of course, about himself.

At the end of our afternoon, I thank Inskeep for his time ? and then I blurt out the kind of favor only a true NPR nerd would ask.

"Would you record the 'Morning Edition' intro with me?"

"You want to do what?" he asks, and I cannot tell if he is appalled or amused or somewhere in between. Whatever his feelings regarding the request, he's game. But not before cautioning: "The sound quality will be terrible."

And so the last audio recordings from that day are not those of an unflappable journalist collecting material for a story but rather of a giddy fan:

"I'm Steve Inskeep..." he says.

"I'm Rachel Friedman..." I say.

"And you're listening to 'Morning Edition' from NPR news."

Eat your heart out, Renee Montagne.

FILE - In this Friday, Jan. 18, 2013 file photo, an All Nippon Airways' Boeing 787 "the Dreamliner" parks on the tarmac as a Japan Airlines' Boeing 767 airplane takes off at Haneda Airport in Tokyo. ANA and JAL said they replaced lithium-ion batteries in their Boeing 787 Dreamliners on multiple occasions before a battery overheating incident led to the worldwide grounding of the jets. ANA said Wednesday, Jan. 30, it replaced batteries on its 787 aircraft some 10 times because they failed to charge properly or showed other problems, and informed Boeing about the swaps. JAL said it had also replaced lithium-ion batteries on its 787 jets but couldn't immediately give details. (AP Photo/Koji Sasahara, File)

(AP) ? U.S. regulators said Wednesday they asked Boeing Co. to provide a full operating history of lithium-ion batteries used in its grounded 787 Dreamliners after Japan's All Nippon Airways revealed it had repeatedly replaced the batteries even before overheating problems surfaced.

National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Peter Knudson said the agency made the request after recently becoming aware of battery problems at ANA that occurred before a Jan. 7 battery fire in a 787 parked at Boston's Logan International Airport. Boeing has already collected some of the information, he said.

ANA said it had replaced batteries on its 787 aircraft some 10 times because they failed to charge properly or showed other problems, and informed Boeing about the swaps. Japan Airlines also said it had replaced 787 batteries. It described the number involved as a few but couldn't immediately give further details.

All 50 of the Boeing 787s in use around the world remain grounded after an ANA flight on Jan. 16 made an emergency landing in Japan when its main battery overheated.

Lithium-ion batteries are prone to overheating and require additional safeguards to prevent fires. However, ANA spokeswoman Megumi Tezuka said the airline was not required to report the battery replacements to Japan's Transport Ministry because they did not interfere with flights and did not raise safety concerns.

Having to replace batteries on aircraft is not uncommon and was not considered out of the ordinary, she said.

Laura Brown, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, said in Washington that the agency was checking whether the previous battery incidents had been reported by Boeing.

With 17 of the jets, ANA was Boeing's launch customer for the technologically advanced airliner. The airline has had to cancel hundreds of flights, affecting tens of thousands of people, but has sought to minimize disruptions by switching to other aircraft as much as possible.

The battery problems experienced by ANA before the emergency landing were first reported by The New York Times.

Japanese and U.S. investigators looking into the Boeing 787's battery problems shifted their attention this week from the battery-maker, GS Yuasa of Kyoto, Japan, to the manufacturer of a monitoring system. That company, Kanto Aircraft Instrument Co. makes a system that monitors voltage, charging and temperature of the lithium-ion batteries.

On Tuesday, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board said it was conducting a chemical analysis of internal short circuiting and thermal damage of the battery that caught fire in Boston.

The probe is also analyzing data from flight data recorders on the aircraft, the NTSB said in a statement on its website.

So you come home at the end of a long work day, put the keys on the counter, and check the answering machine.

After the reminder about your kid?s doctors appointment, and the neighbors asking you to clean up after your dog, imagine if this is the next message:

?Hi, this is Tom Brady calling, . . .?

If he could have followed it up with ?Can Gronk come out and play?? he might be otherwise occupied this week.

But according to Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com, the Patriots are using their star quarterback?s voice to send out a message of thanks to their season-ticket holders.

?On behalf of the entire Patriots organization, I want to thank you for the tremendous support you showed our team this past season,? the message continues. ?Your enthusiasm and passion in the stadium really motivated me and the team on game day. Thanks for being our 12th man on the field. As a season-ticket holder you help provide the foundation for our team?s success and we look forward to welcoming you back in 2013.?

It?s one thing to send a letter or a trinket, but the Patriots are giving their fans a chance to have Tom Brady in their voice mail.

If they really appreciated their fans, they?d get Bill Belichick to record the message next year.

?Thanks. . . . Bye.?

Lilly says generic competition hurts profit, sales

(Reuters) - Eli Lilly and Co said on Tuesday that fourth-quarter profit fell as competition from generic drugs, particularly for its once top-selling schizophrenia drug Zyprexa, drove revenue lower.

The U.S. drugmaker earned $827 million, or 74 cents per share, down from $858 million, or 77 cents per share, a year earlier.

Excluding special items such as asset impairments and restructuring, Lilly earned 85 cents per share. Analysts, on average, expected 78 cents per share.

Revenue dropped by about 1 percent to $5.96 billion, but were above Wall Street expectations of $5.81 billion.

Zyprexa sales slid 49 percent to $385 million from $750 million a year earlier. The company said the sharp drop was partly offset by gains in sales of other drugs and its animal health products.

Lilly forecast that earning would increase this year by 13 percent to 17 percent to $3.82 to $3.97 per share, excluding special items, due to cost controls. Profit will benefit by 7 cents per share due to a research and development tax credit that was delayed until this year due to the late signing of federal legislation.

It predicted sales will be flat to a bit higher this year, in a range of $22.6 billion to $23.4 billion, despite expected generic competition in December for its $5-billion-a-year antidepressant Cymbalta.

Lilly has been battered over the past year by generic forms of Zyprexa. Besides the looming threat from Cymbalta generics, it is girding for copycat forms of its $1 billion-a-year Evista osteoporosis drug that are due to arrive in early 2014.

Cymbalta had sales of $1.42 billion in the fourth quarter, up 20 percent from a year earlier, and a total of $4.99 billion in 2012.

The company hopes to cushion the blow from generics with approvals of some of its 13 experimental drugs now in late-stage trials.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Now it's time to say goodbye to "Epic Mickey."

The interactive division of the Walt Disney Co. announced Tuesday that it is closing Junction Point Studios, its Austin, Texas-based developer that created 2010's "Disney Epic Mickey" and its 2012 sequel "Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two."

Disney said the closure is part of its "effort to address the fast-evolving gaming platforms and marketplace" and to align its resources with its key priorities.

"We're extremely grateful to Warren Spector and the Junction Point team for their creative contributions to Disney with 'Disney Epic Mickey' and 'Disney Epic Mickey 2,'" the studio said in a statement.

Disney acquired Junction Point in 2007. The studio was led by "Deus Ex" and "Thief" creator Warren Spector.

Both "Epic Mickey" games were set in a twisted version of Disneyland called Wasteland and featured Mickey Mouse and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit as protagonists.

"I said to myself as Junction Point embarked on the 'Epic Mickey' journey that, worst case, we'd be 'a footnote in Disney history,'" Spector posted Monday on Facebook. "Looking back on it, I think we did far better than that. With Mickey Mouse as our hero, we introduced a mainstream audience to some cool 'core game' concepts ? and, most especially, we restored Oswald the Lucky Rabbit to a place of prominence."

The first "Epic Mickey," which was released only for the Nintendo Wii, was the sixth best-selling game the month it was released in 2010. "Epic Mickey 2," which was available for the Wii, as well as the Sony PlayStation 3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360, didn't crack the top 10 when it was released last November, according to gaming industry tracker NPD Group.

Disney unveiled plans earlier this month for a new franchise combining a toy line and a game called "Disney Infinity," similar to "Skylanders" from Activision-Blizzard Inc. "Infinity" is being developed by Disney's Salt Lake City, Utah-based developer Avalanche Software and is set to debut in June alongside "Monsters University," the 3-D prequel to the 2001 Disney-Pixar film "Monsters Inc."

dna-repairing-protein-may-be-key-to-preventing-recurrence-of-some ...

Just as the body can become resistant to antibiotics, certain methods of killing cancer tumors can end up creating resistant tumor cells. But a University of Central Florida professor has found a protein present in several types of cancer, including breast and ovarian cancer, which could be helpful in preventing tumors from coming back.

The protein, KLF8, appears to protect tumor cells from drugs aimed at killing them and even aid the tumor cells? ability to regenerate.

?All cells have a DNA-repair mechanism,? explained Jihe Zhao, a medical doctor and researcher who in the past few months has published several articles related to the protein in the Journal of Biological Chemistry and Oncogene, among others. ?That?s why we survive constant DNA damage threats. But KLF8 is overexpressed in specific cancers, such as breast cancer and ovarian cancer. The thought is that if we can stop it from switching on, we may be able to stop the tumors from coming back as part of therapy. We still need to do a lot more research, but it is plausible.

There are between 2.5 million and 2.7 million women who have breast cancer in the United States and 10 to 20 percent will experience a recurrence, according to the American Cancer Society. Current treatment options, depending on the stage of cancer, include surgical removal followed by chemotherapy using a combination of cancer killing drugs. Each year about 22,200 women are also diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

DNA damage-based chemotherapies depend on failure of cancer cells to repair the DNA damage and subsequent cell death, according to the journal article. Aberrant high levels of DNA repair function in the cells likely increase not only the resistance of the cells to such therapies but also the malignancy of the cells due to improper DNA repair-mediated genomic and chromosomal instability.

In the study, Zhao?s team tested one specific cancer-fighting drug used in the treatment of breast cancer to determine the role of the protein.

?Indeed, our results have clearly linked the KLF8-promoted DNA repair to the cell resistance to doxorubicin-induced cell death,? Zhao said. ?It remains to be determined whether KLF8 plays a similar role in repairing DNA damage caused by other types of genotoxic agents such as DNA alkylating agents and ionizing radiation.?

Even so, the results suggest that in addition to enhancing the drug resistance of the cancer cells, KLF8 could play a role in disturbing genomic integrity through its aberrant DNA repair function and subsequently contribute to aggressive progression of cancer.

Zhao, an associate professor, moved his team to UCF?s Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences at the College of Medicine in 2010. Previously he was at Albany Medical College as an assistant professor and before that he spent six years in post-doctoral training in Cornell University, ?Ithaca, N.Y.? He earned his M.D. from Chinese Medical University, Shenyang, China, and Ph.D. in cancer cell biology from Tohoku University Faculty of Medicine, Sendai, Japan. He sits on the editorial boards of several peer-reviewed journals related to cancer research and reviews research articles for many prestigious journals including Cancer Research, Oncogene, Molecular Cell, Nanomedicine, and Journal of Biological Chemistry, to name a few. His research programs are funded by National Cancer Institute of National Institute of Health, American Cancer Society, Susan Komen for the Cure Breast Cancer Foundation, and others.

Refugees again, Palestinians flee Syria's war

EIN EL-HILWEH, Lebanon (AP) ? When Syrian warplanes bombed a Palestinian refugee camp in Damascus last December, Umm Sami rounded up her three sons, shut the windows and locked the doors so they could neither hear nor heed the call to arms by rebels and pro-government gunmen fighting in the streets.

Then she told her sons they were leaving their home in the Yarmouk refugee camp in the Syrian capital for neighboring Lebanon, where they would wait out Syria's civil war.

"There will be no more martyrs for Palestine in my family," Umm Sami said, who only gave her nickname for fear of reprisals. "This war is a Syrian problem."

Now safe in Lebanon, the 45-year-old widow and her family have joined thousands of other Palestinian refugees who have found shelter in the country since the uprising against Syrian President Bashar Assad erupted nearly two years ago. The conflict has left more than 2 million people internally displaced, and pushed 650,000 more to seek refuge abroad.

Umm Sami's resolve to keep her sons out of the fight in Syria ties into a deep-rooted sentiment among a generation of Palestinian refugees who say they are fed up with being dragged into the region's conflicts on a promise of getting their own state.

The Palestinian exodus from Syria has also revived a decades-old debate over the refugees' right of return to their homes that are now in Israel. That has added another layer of complexity to a conflict already loaded with sectarian and ethnic overtones that have spilled over into neighboring countries, raising fears of a regional war.

Palestinians living in Arab countries ? including the half-million refugees in Syria ? are descendants of the hundreds of thousands who fled or were driven from their homes in the war that followed Israel's creation in 1948. Having scattered across the Middle East since then, Palestinians consistently have found themselves in the middle of the region's conflicts.

After the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq toppled Saddam Hussein, hundreds of Palestinians were killed as the Sunni and Shiite militias fought for dominance of the country. Iraq's Shiite majority saw Saddam, who like most Palestinians was a Sunni Muslim, as a patron of the stateless Palestinians, granting them rights the dictator denied his own citizens because they were of the rival sect.

About 1,000 Palestinians fled the 2004-07 sectarian bloodshed in Baghdad, living in a refugee camp near the Syrian border before being resettled in third countries.

During Lebanon's 1975-1990 civil war, Palestinians played a major role, fighting alongside Muslim militiamen against Christian forces.

Umm Sami, who was born in a refugee camp in Lebanon before the war, was twice forced to flee the fighting, most notably in 1982 when her family escaped the Sabra and Chatilla camps during the notorious massacre of Palestinians there by Christian militias.

She would eventually bury her father, two brothers and her husband ? all fallen fighters ? before leaving for Syria and settling with her four sons in Yarmouk, one of nine Palestinian camps in Syria.

Her youngest son died in a traffic accident while serving in the Palestinian unit of the Syrian army just weeks before the anti-Assad revolt started in March 2011. None of her other sons joined the revolution, she said, because "they don't want to die."

Unlike in Lebanon, where Palestinians are cramped into notoriously lawless camps, banned from all but the most menial professions and barred from owning property, Palestinians in Syria are well integrated and enjoy full citizenship rights, except for the right to vote.

But when the uprising against Assad erupted in the southern province of Daraa in March 2011, some Palestinians living in a camp there joined in the peaceful protests. When the fighting spread to the northern city of Aleppo in last summer, some took up arms against the regime.

In Damascus, most stayed on the sidelines, but as the civil war reached Yarmouk late last year, a densely populated residential area just 8 kilometers (5 miles) from the heart of the capital, most residents backed the rebels. Some groups, however, such as the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command, opted to fight alongside Assad's troops.

Palestinian officials say more than 700 Palestinians have been killed in the Yarmouk fighting. Most of the camp's 150,000 inhabitants have fled, according to the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees. Some of them have found safe haven in areas of Damascus and other Syrian cities, but most have escaped to camps in Lebanon.

"We go from catastrophe to catastrophe, from refugee camp to refugee camp, but at least we are alive," Umm Sami said in Ein el-Hilweh, Lebanon's largest Palestinian refugee camp, near the southern port city of Sidon. She and her sons, who are all in their 20s and university graduates, fled Yarmouk with only the clothes on their backs, leaving behind a two-bedroom apartment and jobs that paid the bills.

Now, they are jobless in Lebanon, officially barred from legal employment, and left to live off help from relatives and handouts from the camp's mosques.

Ein en-Hilweh normally houses 65,000 people, but since mid-December, when a flood of refugees from Yarmouk started arriving, the population has steadily grown by several hundred a day, putting a further strain on resources.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said he asked U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon last month to seek Israeli permission to bring Palestinians caught in Syria's civil war to their homeland. Last week, he said that Israel agreed to allow 150,000 Palestinians refugees from Syrian into the West Bank and Gaza ? as long as they relinquished the right of return to what is now Israel. Abbas said he refused.

With no end to the Syria conflict in sight, residents of Ein el-Hilweh have started building a camp within a refugee camp for their compatriots escaping the violence across the border.

They've converted the camp's children's library into housing for dozens of families. Reading rooms, offices, hallways and even bathrooms have been partitioned with makeshift walls, boards and even blankets as families try to carve out space to cook, eat and sleep.

In the library's front yard, a new structure is being built to house at least 10 more families.

"We do what we can to help and find them a home, because they are not going back to Syria soon," said Sheik Jamal Khatab, who oversees the registration of refugees and distribution of aid.

The biggest challenge facing the Palestinian refugees, Khatab said, is not to be dragged into the Syrian civil war ? on either side. He also warned that the hardship awaiting Palestinians after the war ends will be tougher than the one they have been living as stateless people.

"It's in our interest not to interfere in this conflict, even though the Syrian regime is a tyrannical regime," he said. "We are not Syrians, and any side that will win this war will consider us enemies."

South Africa force draw and send Morocco out | Morocco World News

DURBAN, South Africa, January 27, 2013 (AFP)

South Africa came from behind twice to draw 2-2 with Morocco Sunday and top Group A in the Africa Cup of Nations.

Bafana Bafana (The Boys) finished on five points with Cape Verde, but a superior goal difference enabled the hosts to stay above the debutants, whose fairy-tale continued with a 2-1 win over Angola in Port Elizabeth.

Issam El Adoua and Abdelilah Hafidi put the Atlas Lions ahead in this Indian Ocean city only for May Mahlangu and Siyabonga Sangweni to equalise and condemn Morocco to a fourth consecutive first round exit.

Morocco made making five changes from the team that came alive only in the closing stages of a midweek 1-1 draw with Cape Verde.

In came Ahmed Kantari, Kamel Chafni, Chahir Belghazouani, Youssef Kaddioui and Youssef El Arabi as coach Rachid Taoussi opted for a five-man midfield and among those axed were wide men Nordin Amrabat and Oussama Assaidi.

South Africa, who made a similar number of alterations after being held by Cape Verde in the tournament opener, gave a vote of confidence to the starting line-up in a 2-0 victory over Angola.

Bafana Bafana were stricken by nerves in the early stages as the Atlas Lions attacked from the kick-off to quieten a sell-out 60,000 crowd at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Suspended playmaker Younes Belhanda was not being missed as young Spain-based midfielder Abdelaziz Barrada took control and the home team had several scares before falling behind.

El Adoua rose highest in the heart of the six-yard box to nod in a corner with Khune reacting too slowly as the South African defence was once more exposed at a set piece.

Morocco were comfortably containing the host nation, apart from a Bernard Parker shot from an acute angle that flew across veteran goalkeeper Nadir Lamyaghri but wide of the far post.

Chafni had a glorious chance to double the advantage just before half-time as he sprung an offside trap and broke clear, but Khune raced outside his box, blocked the ball with his legs and cleared it.

Thuso Phala gave the home crowd a rare reason to cheer eight minutes into the second half with a curling free kick over the wall and it took a diving one-hand save from Lamyaghri to keep the ball out.

There have been concerns for some time about the pace and positioning of South Africa centre-backs Sangweni and captain Bongani Khumalo and they were caught napping again on the hour mark.

El Arabi, a highly-effective substitute against Cape Verde, found himself alone with just Khune to beat, but the goalkeeper once again came to the rescue with a one-hand parry that was cleared.

It proved a costly miss as South Africa levelled on 71 minutes with Sangweni bursting into opposition territory and passing to Tokelo Rantie, and his pass was superbly curled into the net by Mahlangu.

In a dramatic finish, South Africa fell behind again when substitue Abdelilah Hafidi fired home on 82 minutes only for defender Sangweni to level four minutes later with a curling shot any striker would have been proud of.

Barge with 80,000 gallons oil hits bridge, leaks

A barge carrying 80,000 gallons of oil hit a railroad bridge in Vicksburg, Miss., on Sunday, spilling light crude into the Mississippi River and closing the waterway for eight miles in each direction, the Coast Guard said. A second barge was damaged.

Investigators did not know how much had spilled, but an oily sheen was reported as far as three miles downriver of Vicksburg after the 1:12 a.m. accident, said Lt. Ryan Gomez of the Coast Guard's office in Memphis, Tenn.

It wasn't immediately clear whether the second barge also hit the bridge or if it ran into the first barge, he said. The first barge was still leaking late Sunday afternoon, and emergency workers set out booms to absorb and contain the oil, Gomez said. The river's closure halted at least five northbound and two southbound vessels, he said.

The bridge was found safe for trains, said Petty Officer Carlos Vega

Both barges were being pushed by the tugboat Nature's Way Endeavor. The website for Nature's Way Marine LLC of Theodore, Ala., identifies it as a 3,000-horsepower, 90-foot long boat, making it the largest and highest-powered of the company's five tugs. It was built in 1974 and underwent a complete rebuild in 2011, according to the company.

A company manager referred calls to the Coast Guard command center at Vicksburg.

The Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Vicksburg sent a team to assess the spill and oversee the cleanup, a Coast Guard news release said. The agency said a command center at Vicksburg included representatives from the Coast Guard and Nature's Way, as well as local officials and law enforcement.

(AP) ? French and Malian forces pushed toward the fabled desert town of Timbuktu on Sunday, as the two-week-long French mission gathered momentum against the Islamist extremists who have ruled the north for more than nine months.

So far the French forces have met little resistance, though it remains unclear what battles may await them farther north. The Malian military blocked dozens of international journalists from trying to travel toward Timbuktu.

Lt. Col. Diarran Kone, a spokesman for Mali's defense minister, declined to give details Sunday about the advance on Timbuktu citing the security of an ongoing operation.

Timbuktu's mayor, Ousmane Halle, is in the capital, Bamako, and he told The Associated Press he had no information about the remote town, where phone lines have been cut for days.

A convoy of about 15 vehicles transporting international journalists also was blocked Sunday afternoon in Konna, some 186 miles (300 kilometers) south of Timbuktu.

The move on Timbuktu comes a day after the French announced they had seized the airport and a key bridge in Gao, one of the other northern provincial capitals under the grip of radical Islamists.

Meanwhile, French and African land forces also were making their way to Gao from neighboring Niger.

French and Malian forces were patrolling Gao Sunday afternoon searching for remnants of the Islamists and maintaining control of the bridge and airport, said Kone, the Mali military spokesman.

The French special forces, which had stormed in by land and by air, had come under fire in Gao from "several terrorist elements" that were later "destroyed," the French military said in a statement on its website Saturday.

In a later press release entitled "French and Malian troops liberate Gao" the French ministry of defense said they brought back the town's mayor, Sadou Diallo, who had fled to the Malian capital of Bamako far to the west.

However, a Gao official interviewed by telephone by The Associated Press said late Saturday that coalition forces so far only controlled the airport, the bridge and surrounding neighborhoods.

And in Paris, a defense ministry official clarified that the city had not been fully liberated, and that the process of freeing Gao was continuing.

Both officials insisted on anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

Gao, the largest city in northern Mali, was seized by a mixture of al-Qaida-linked Islamist fighters more than nine months ago along with the other northern provincial capitals of Kidal and Timbuktu.

The rebel group that turned Gao into a replica of Afghanistan under the Taliban has close ties to Moktar Belmoktar, the Algerian national who has long operated in Mali and who last week claimed responsibility for the terror attack on a BP-operated natural gas plant in Algeria.

His fighters are believed to include Algerians, Egyptians, Mauritanians, Libyans, Tunisians, Pakistanis and even Afghans.

Meanwhile, the Pentagon said late Saturday that Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told Le Drian the United States will aid the French military with aerial refueling missions.

U.S. aerial refueling planes would be a boost to air support for French ground forces as they enter vast areas of northern Mali, the size of Texas, that are controlled by al-Qaida-linked extremists.

The U.S. was already helping France by transporting French troops and equipment to the West African nation. However, the U.S. government has said it cannot provide direct aid to the Malian military because the country's democratically elected president was overthrown in a coup last March.

The Malian forces, however, are now expected to get more help than initially promised from neighboring nations.

Col. Shehu Usman Abdulkadir told The Associated Press that the African force will be expanded from an anticipated 3,200 troops to some 5,700 ? a figure that does not include the 2,200 soldiers promised by Chad.

Most analysts had said the earlier figure was far too small to confront the Islamists given the huge territory they hold.

Since France began its military operation, the Islamists have retreated from three small towns in central Mali: Diabaly, Konna and Douentza. However, the Islamists still control much of the north, including the provincial capital of Kidal.

The Mali conflict will dominate the African Union summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Sunday and Monday.

Ryan says Republicans need to pick its fights with Obama

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Rep. Paul Ryan said Saturday that Republicans need to stick together and pick their fights during President Barack Obama's second term, rejecting some White House proposals outright and trying to infuse others with conservative principles.

In a speech to conservatives, the GOP's 2012 vice presidential nominee said Obama would attempt to divide Republicans but that the party must avoid internal squabbles as it seeks to rebound from a second straight presidential loss.

"We can't get rattled. We won't play the villain in his morality plays. We have to stay united," Ryan said at the National Review Institute event. "We have to show that if given the chance, we can govern. We have better ideas."

The Wisconsin congressman outlined a pragmatic approach for a party dealing with last November's election defeats and trying to determine whether to oppose Obama's agenda at every turn or shape his proposals with conservative principles.

With a surging minority population altering the electorate, Republican leaders have discussed the need to attract more women and Hispanics while at the same time standing firm to the values that unite conservatives.

The party's future was a major theme during the three-day meeting of conservatives activists, who expected to hear from Govs. Scott Walker of Wisconsin, Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, Bob McDonnell of Virginia, and Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas.

Ryan rejected the notion that Republicans were "in the wilderness," noting that the party controls the House and most statehouses. But he said Obama's victory over Mitt Romney meant that Republicans would need to recalibrate their approach to deal with the new political realities.

"If we want to promote conservatism, we'll need to use every tool at our disposal," Ryan said. "Sometimes, we will have to reject the president's proposals ? that time may come more than once. And sometimes we'll have to make them better." He said Republicans should have two main goals for the next four years, namely "to mitigate bad policies" and "to advance good policy wherever we can."

Ryan acknowledged that "we all didn't see eye to eye" on the recent "fiscal cliff" vote to deal with a combination of spending cuts and higher taxes that were set to take effect at the start of the year. He defended his support for the bill, saying it was the only way to avoid sweeping tax increases and prevent the economy from going into a free-fall.

As chairman of the House Budget Committee, Ryan said Republicans needed to guard against a debt crisis for the country that would undermine the economy. He said he would promote changes to Medicare and Medicaid and would propose a budget "that will balance and pay down the debt."

But November's election results still linger. Ryan said he was "disappointed" by the outcome, saying he was "looking forward to taking on the big challenges" while living at the vice president's residence. "My kids were looking forward to having a pool," he joked.

North York Neck Pain Alleviated Naturally With Acupuncture Needles

North York acupuncture therapy could be a way of helping a body to rebalance itself. The process involves the manipulation of thin needles that are inserted into specific points in the body. These points correspond to acupuncture points identified through traditional Chinese medicine.

The reason for these specific locations is to help remedy any imbalances in the body. By using these super fine needles the acupuncturist is able to facilitate the way the energy flows through the body. This belief hinges on the the thought that energy can somehow be prevented from flowing freely around the body.

This truly is an ancient process, and its exact development isn?t really known. One explanation is that soldiers in being wounded by sharp pointed instruments in battle, and who went on to recover, found various ailments were better than before. It?s thought the original needles could?ve consisted of bone and stone, before being replaced with metal needles.

There really is not a lot of evidence as to how this method may work. There is probably even less known about why it may work, but some people do find it helpful. The exact points for the needles insertion are decided by the acupuncturist. They carefully question the person beforehand, and may also just observe while others will use a more hands on approach to feel for tender or sore spots.

They are quite likely to take a person?s pulse, and also to look at the tongue. It is something that is frequently based on intuition, philosophy and experience. The needles used tend to be made out of stainless steel and are extremely thin. Most are disposable, although some are reused after being thoroughly sterilized.

Shorter needles are used around the face and neck. Longer needles can be used in other ares. They are so skillfully inserted by North York acupuncture pros that most people will not be aware they are going in.

In the fight against obesity, it's all about balance | MNN - Mother ...

What role can a soft drink company play in America?s war on obesity? In the face of controversial decisions like New York City?s soda ban, The Coca-Cola Company believes it can play a role in a healthier diet and has instituted several programs to inspire people to live healthier, active lifestyles. Some of these programs involve rebuilding community parks, while another program calls upon physicians to record physical activity as a vital sign during patient visits. MNN, which counts Coca-Cola as one of its sponsors, interviewed Dr. Rhona Applebaum, Coca-Cola?s Chief Scientific and Regulatory Officer, to find out more. Applebaum received her master?s degree in nutrition from Drexel University and her doctorate in food microbiology from University of Wisconsin. She leads the Scientific and Regulatory Affairs Division at Coca-Cola, which is in part responsible for driving research and education programs about calorie intake, health, physical activity and food safety.

?

MNN: What can a soft drink company like Coca-Cola do to help people live healthier lives?
Rhona Applebaum: Coca-Cola?s active, healthy living philosophy is about encouraging people to eat right and move more. I subscribe to the fact that it?s about the whole diet and not about an individual food, which is what some people tend to focus on.

?

Active, healthy living is absolutely essential for our company; it?s not just some nice sound bite we like to say ? it?s a fact. We know that our business can only be as healthy as the communities in which we operate. That?s why we?ve supported programs like Triple Play that encourage kids to eat a balanced diet, become more physically active and increase their ability to engage in healthy relationships.

?

And in 2012 our philanthropic arm of the Company ? The Coca-Cola Foundation ? awarded almost $10 million to healthy living initiatives across North America.

?

Are soft drinks unfairly targeted in your opinion? Do they have a rightful place in the diet?

We firmly believe all our products have a place in an active, healthy lifestyle. Any food or beverage can fit into your life ? it?s all about how much and how often. At the end of the day, we encourage people to be as active as they can be; we encourage and promote physical activity. The higher your energy balance ? balancing the calories you take in with the calories you burn ? the healthier you?re going to be. We consume calories from many different sources. But we shouldn?t single out one food or beverage alone as the unique cause of obesity.

?

Please explain higher energy balance.
?Energy balance? refers to the concept of balancing calories in with calories out to maintain a healthy weight. Let?s compare two people, one who consumes 2,500 calories per day versus one who consumes only 1,500 calories. You might think the person who only eats 1,500 calories a day would look healthier because he appears thin, but that person probably is not getting all the essential nutrients he needs. At 1,500 calories, he?s probably not going to get the necessary physical activity levels, either.

?

On the other hand, if you?re eating a balanced diet and taking in 2,500 calories a day and are very physically active (and the activity can be moderate and not necessarily vigorous); if you?re moving and eating and you?re burning as many calories as you consume, then sure, you can enjoy any food and beverage within the Coca-Cola portfolio, including ones that are low-calorie or zero-calorie.

?

What has Coca-Cola done to encourage its employees to lead healthier lifestyles?
We have a great wellness facility at our Atlanta headquarters. We have signs throughout our corporate campus reminding employees to take the stairs and to park far away from the entrance. We also provide incentives ?for our employees around the country?to be physically active, including discounted gym memberships, $60-off annual medical contributions just for completing online health assessments, and we also encourage our people to measure their health stats regularly.

?

Personally, I have a standing desk. (Yes, I practice what I preach.) But to be healthy, you don?t need anything complicated or expensive. If you work at a desk all day, you need to get moving throughout the day and try to stand as much as you can while you?re on the computer. Simply take a walk when you get a chance during the day or take the stairs ? it?s the little things that will add up. ?

?

Do you think Coca-Cola is playing a part in reducing in childhood obesity?
I think we?re a part of the solution but it will take all of us ? government, business and civil society ? working together to find meaningful solutions to such a complex issue. In fact, we worked with the beverage industry to remove full-calorie soft drinks from schools in 2006 and replaced them with lower-calorie, smaller-portion beverage options.? By 2010, we reduced beverage calories delivered to schools by a dramatic 90 percent. We are also working with leaders like The National Governors Council on Physical Fitness to build fitness centers across the country that ?provide the means for people to get active. To help change the way people think about nutrition and exercise we need to work together. What I?d like to see accomplished, and what Coca-Cola is striving for in the schools, is to better develop standards of fitness and nutrition. We have testing standards in basic subjects, but we also need nutrition and fitness standards because kids who eat better, and who are more active, will thrive in school.

?

What are the most successful programs Coca-Cola has implemented to date to increase health awareness?
We have several programs that are contributing greatly to fostering and teaching principles of healthy lifestyles, but I?ll name two: Triple Play is a program that was launched in 2005 by the Boys & Girls Clubs of America in collaboration with the Department of Health and Human Services with support from The Coca-Cola Company to encourage kids to eat a balanced diet, become more physically active and increase their ability to engage in healthy relationships. A review of the program found that boys and girls who participated in Triple Play were more physically active and had a better understanding of nutrition than those who did not participate. The kids? self-esteem also soared.

The National Governors Council on Physical Fitness is also making a big impact. We?ve dedicated more than $5 million to provide 100 communities with new fitness centers for schools. In addition, The Coca-Cola Foundation has awarded $3.4 million in grants to support fitness and nutrition programs in the U.S. and around the world. Working with the National Foundation for Governor's Fitness Councils and the American College of Sports Medicine, Coca-Cola will place 100 new fitness centers in schools across the U.S. over the next five years. The unbranded centers will feature new fitness equipment and provide more than 5 million workouts annually; helping communities put physical activity back into schools.

?

You work in a male-dominated world. What was your experience like going through college and post-graduate?
For my post-graduate work, I focused on science: the theoretical and practical elements in nutrition as well as healthy lifestyle factors; toxicology; plant pathology and sustainable agriculture. Long before the days of social media, I realized the importance of networking and working in a global society. Yes, I?m the first female chief scientist at Coca-Cola. Although women are still underrepresented in science, my abilities were developed because of amazing male mentors. They looked at me as nothing but a professional who they wanted to groom. I am where I am today because of my ?STEM? foundation (science, technology, engineering and math) mentoring. We?re not going to be able to compete in terms of pioneering developments in health and science without that kind of mentoring ... I?m very passionate about that.

?

I do think that women are catching up, but we still need more women to go into STEM disciplines. At Wisconsin there were many women Ph.D. candidates in science-related disciplines, but that?s not always the case across the U.S. or globally. And, though more is needed, I am proud to say we have many women working at Coca-Cola throughout the company.
