Reader Discussion: What's Your Favorite Gaming Moment From ...

There were a lot of great games released in 2012. If you had to whittle all of your favorite gaming experiences from the year down to one particular moment, what would it be?

How about I go first??

My moment of the year came courtesy of Far Cry 3. I was staking out a pirate outpost from a distance. I'm kind of neurotic with these kinds of things, and I was taking my time. I'd walk a few steps, scan the patrols with my camera, and then move into cover. Over the course of about 10 minutes I had worked my way around the perimeter, and I was just about ready to mount my attack. I pulled out my sniper rifle for one last quick survey and was lining up a shot when, out of nowhere, a tiger pounced on the pirate I'd zoomed in on and the place immediately erupted into chaos. I ended up just walking in with a shotgun and mowing down the unsuspecting (and understandably panicked) survivors.

It was silly, unexpected, and a fitting summary of one of my favorite games of the year.

This isn't a favorite moment, but I figured I'd share while I still had your attention. I was playing some Skyrim yesterday (getting around to playing the DLC), when a dragon did one of its dragony nosedives at me and my party. It hit the ground with its nose, and, without changing from the diving pose, ricocheted off and bounced into the stratosphere. That was really...something.

Your turn! What do you have?

As you might imagine, the comments are going to be a minefield of potential spoilers. Tread carefully.

Star Wars Miniland at Legoland Florida

On?our trip to Legoland last week? (a Christmas?gift for our sons), my family and I were greeted with a wonderful surprise: All six episodes of Star Wars as told in Lego bricks.

I still can?t believe I didn?t know about it beforehand! It was in the press?when it opened on November 9th, but I guess I wasn?t paying attention. Earlier in 2012, a Star Wars Miniland had opened at Legoland Windsor, and the one at Legoland California has been open since March 2011 and an expansion has recently been added.

GeekMom has written plenty?already about Legoland Florida, so?while my husband and I were planning our trip, I wasn?t considering post fodder. But there it was ??some fresh new geekery to shout about to the masses. GeekMom Dakster?s husband trooped at the grand opening, but I think I might have been the first GeekMom to actually see it (and be it known it?s rare for me to be the first GeekMom to get to do anything this cool!).

And we almost missed it altogether! It?s tucked in a wooded area towards the back of the Miniland U.S.A. section of the park. You Moms know how it goes ? the kids see something off in the distance and you?re getting pulled in a different direction than you were intending. In our case, while we were at Miniland USA, the kids were begging to ride on the Dragon rollercoaster in the Lego Kingdom section.

Enjoy some pictures from our visit!

Gallery director Ruth Grover says that, in addition to work by University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Department of Art students and faculty, the eighth annual Diane Marek Visiting Artist Series in early spring will bring artist Summer Wheat to Chattanooga.

"Pushing the limits of material and process, Wheat expressively 'sculpts' and 'sews' with paint. Interested in the dichotomy of high and low culture, and society's notions of beauty, Wheat's subject matter centers upon the figure and narrative, both imagined and recollected, to explore the vulnerability and contradiction of life and story with sincerity and generous curiosity, and a warm touch of humor," says Grover.

Worker's Compensation: What Are The Legal Rights?

Maryland Business InsuranceAs a business owner it is important to understand the legal rights of employees when it pertains to workers compensation rights. Although workers compensation laws may vary from state to state, it is essential that any business that has employees carry workers compensation insurance. The basic tenets of workers compensation laws state that if an employee is injured during the course of performing his/her duties on the job they are entitled to medical care and financial compensation without having to prove that the employer was at fault. Under many workers compensation laws this is the only remedy available to workers in the event of injury. Workers compensation insurance will protect a business owner from having to pay out of pocket expensive medical costs and other financial considerations for an injured worker.

Can a Worker Sue?

In most cases an injured worker cannot file a lawsuit against the employer. However, there are two exceptions to that regulation: 1) when an employer intentionally causes injury to the worker and 2) when an employer is required to have workers compensation insurance but fails to do so. ?In the case of intentionally acts the view of the courts is generally narrow; it is not enough to prove an unsafe working environment, but a worker has to prove that an employer specifically acted with the intention to cause harm. For instance, an environment that may result in a falling object is not enough to prove intention but an employer that deliberately pushes an object onto an employee resulting in an injury does prove intent.

Appeals

Most worker injuries are quickly recovered from. There are occasions though in the case of severe and long term injuries where workers compensation is denied. Worker may then seek the assistance of a workers comp attorney who will appeal the decision. An appeal will take place in more of an administrative setting than in a court room where strict guidelines dictate the limitations of attorneys on both sides. Relaxed evidentiary rules are often involved along with a cap on the fees that attorneys may charge.

Misconduct

In the case of a worker participating in will misconduct or working under the influence of an intoxicant there is recompense. Most states restrict injured workers of these conditions from collecting workers compensation.

Exceptions

The rights of workers in case of injury are finite. There are few exceptions to those rights issues by federal statutes: The Jones Act, The Federal Employment Liability Act (FELA), The Longshore and Harbor Worker?s Compensation Act, and the Black Lung Benefits Act. ?Each of these has specific rules for implementation.

I don't know why you're here. To hear a story? To weep? To rejoice? To question? To judge? I don't know, and frankly, I don't care. Just sit down, sit down already! This story is not meant for the fainthearted, and it is not meant for the emotional. It is for the strong. It is for those who can look into the face of all that is wrong with society and say, "I can fix this." This is for the ones who have been touched by darkness, and have come out alive. None of you are leaving yet, huh? Alright, then, let me begin with the Sun and the Moon. Ah, strange beginning, yes? Yes, it is. But not as surprising as you might think. Come now, you must admit that the Sun and Moon control the universe. They control our entire lives! They decide what happens, and they are the only things our kind has not even come close to manipulating through technology, through our ideas, through our petty little emotions. No, they are unaffected, they are constant, and they have been around since the beginning.

The universe began with their marriage. It was their union that started Earth, you see. It was their love and affection for each other that created the most damned of all worlds. It was their strong emotions that instilled in us what we call 'humanity.' This irrationality that all of us - deny it if you want, some of you, but you will see in time how all are the same - cannot escape is the result of the Sun and Moon. The galaxy was held in place, for centuries. The human world remained unpredictable and at times shakier than the Sun and Moon wanted, but it always righted itself in the end; the Sun and Moon made sure of that. Eventually, they decided to have children. Children?! How do they have children?! Shut up, let me explain. The galaxy did begin with marriage, but it also began with a little bit of magic. Or, well, more of an unseen force that only the Sun and Moon could control. They directed it to where it ought to go when the time called for it, and you can bet that for the sake of Earth they did use that bag to bring the world back to balance, but for the most part, it stayed in a bag. A small little bag that the Sun and Moon carried everywhere. I don't want to get into the details of it now, for the sake of your youthful innocence, but they, achem, made love with this magic, and the Stars were born. Beautiful Stars, all devoted to their mother and loyal to their father. They stayed with their mother, though, for they aged so slowly, and demanded even more motherly love than even you did, young man. Or are you a lady fella? I can't see very well, I'm old. How else do you think I know this stuff? I've been around the whole time.

Well, moving on. The Moon wanted more children, eventually, but not just stars. She told her husband that she wanted children who weren't so demanding of her. They had enough Stars, she insisted. Can't we have something else? The Sun thought and pondered and fretted, searching for the right answer, for he loved his wife very dearly and wanted to please her. Ah, but of course! Two decades had passed since she had first asked, and to her credit, she never asked or complained after that, but he never forgot, and he finally had the answer: human children! This would take a little more than a little bit of magic, but alas, it happened. Beautiful children, six girls and six boys. six of them of the Sun, six of them of the Moon. But they couldn't live with the Sun and the Moon; they didn't have enough magic for that. So sadly, the Sun and Moon sent them down to Earth, to live with us. They were sent down in golden raindrops, invisible to the human eye. They traveled through space and time, each of them arriving at a different pace to Earth. They were born with a little bit of magic inside of them, creating an uncontrollable power inside of them that would not reveal itself until one of their parents so desired. They lived apart, some of them adopted, some of them living on the streets, etc. All was well, and as much as the Sun and Moon missed and wanted to interact with their children, they knew better. They instead raised them in a more subtle manner, guiding them from the background, watching over them, disciplining them, even comforting them, through their own small ways.

But the Moon was a very insistent woman, a very willful mother. She became angry at being so far from her children, and eventually went to her husband and stamped her foot. "I'm tired of watching them from afar!" she said, eyes ablaze with her fierce temper. "I want to be with them. I want to go down and be a mother, a real one. This is what I want, and I demand that you comply with my desires. I only want to be a mother."

"I forbid it," the Sun calmly replied, turning her down with the gentle manner he often used with the Moon. Never before had he been forced to deny her, and it was difficult, but he persisted. Soon, he became angry with the Moon's persistent efforts to abandon her post. She begged him to give her another daughter for the sole purpose of training her to take her place in a few years. He spoke harshly to her, knowing that no being but themselves could handle their responsibilities, and shortly after the Moon refused to take her post after the Sun's time was up. The sun now blazed endlessly; with each passing day, the Sun's self-restraint grew weaker and weaker, and the Earth was soon suffering from extreme heat. If something wasn't done quickly, the Earth would collapse, even without the Sun's stepping down from his post. One day, he turned to demand that his wife 'suck it up,' only to find that she was gone. Completely gone. His face dropped when he realized there was only one place he could have gone: Earth. Thus, he left his post. The world was plunged into darkness, and most of the human population died. The only survivors were the twelve children, and the humans a few of them had chosen to protect at all costs.

The Moon had found each of them. In a matter of months, she had congregated them in the middle of nowhere, a place to be found in a picture book depicting the country. There was nothing but flat ground, so that all of them were in sight of each other. The Moon and her children lived in harmony for awhile, residing in a castle the Moon had made with her magic, and dubbed the land 'Celest.' For two weeks, everyone was happy. The children came to terms with the truth quickly, as they had always known there was something different about them. They were getting to know each other, which I'm sure you can imagine; a family has been separated for their entire lives until now, and to add to that, everyone else is dead except for them. Of course they're special. They always have been. Even more so, now that the Moon had arrived and therefore brought their powers to life. They were special together now, happy and untouched by whatever could have hurt them if it was alive. Everything was perfect. Until, of course, it wasn't. The Sun had finally found his Moon, and he dragged her home. She followed him with pride and dignity, as the children watched, confused, clueless even about the identity of their own father.

When the Moon got home, she endured a long lecture from her husband, and when she got her chance, grabbed the bag of magic. She released all of it, and placed a curse on Earth. The children will fight a war, she prophesied. Civilization will not find peace, and will not renew itself, until the battle is over. And thus, the Moon's War began. The children were immediately placed on the side of their 'main' parent, as they began to call it, and began to hate each other fiercely. The battle, you see, was not one of blood or weapons. The battleground was built on lies, on secrets, on betrayal, and lies, and spies, and mind games. They were going to slowly force the other side on their knees, when they least expected it. Both sides were determined to lash out physically when they were positive of their victory; after all, they couldn't afford any deaths. But I must admit that I wouldn't be surprised if any of them killed themselves to get away from that kind of mental and emotional torture. Like I said, humans are emotional. They can't help it.

Eventually, they'll find that they can't help but fall in love, either. It's a mess out there, you guys. What's that song called? Love is a battlefield? Yes, yes it is. You know what they say - all is fair in love. And war.

Futures dip as US hurdles toward fiscal cliff

NEW YORK (AP) ? Stock futures are moving lower ahead of a last-ditch effort by the White House and GOP congressional leaders to hash out a budget deal before a year-end deadline strikes.

Dow Jones industrial futures are down 45 points to 12,958. The broader S&P futures have lost 5.2 points to 1,405.50. Nasdaq futures are down 10.75 points to 2,611.75.

Though many lawmakers say they are open to last-minute offers, few expect any offers of substance this late.

Top congressional leaders are meeting Friday afternoon for the first time since Nov. 16 and the House convenes Sunday evening, with one day remaining in 2012.

If no deal is reached, a slate of simultaneous tax hikes and spending cuts will automatically be set in motion and threaten to push the economy back into recession.

Jobless claims fall to lowest level in nearly five years

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment aid fell last week to nearly its lowest level in 4 1/2 years, a possible sign that employers have picked up the pace of hiring.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 12,000 to a seasonally adjusted 350,000, the Labor Department said on Thursday. The prior week's figure was revised to show 1,000 more applications than previously reported.

After spiking in the wake of a mammoth storm that ravaged the East Coast in late October, the weekly levels of new claims have now dropped to their lowest levels since the early days of the 2007-09 recession. The four-week moving average fell 11,250 last week to 356,750, the lowest since March 2008.

The claims data for last week has no direct relation to the Labor Department's monthly employment report, but suggests the surge in layoffs since the recession has at least run its course.

Companies in recent months have been adding to their payrolls at a lackluster pace, and analysts expect the monthly employment report due on January 4 will show 143,000 jobs created in December, down from 146,000 in November.

Recent claims data could point to a stronger pace of hiring, but many analysts are cautious about extrapolating from the weekly data.

"There is usually a high margin of error in predicting the monthly payroll number," said Michelle Meyer, senior economist at Bank of America Merrill Lynch at New York. "That's even more the case this month from the residual effects of the hurricane and year-end seasonal adjustments," she said.

U.S. stock index futures edged higher, putting the S&P 500 on track to snap a three-day skid, as U.S. President Barack Obama returned to Washington to restart negotiations to avert some $600 billion in tax hikes and government spending cuts due to begin in early January.

Going over this so-called "fiscal cliff" would likely put the U.S. economy back into recession.

While the report on jobless claims had a positive tone, it also included a caveat, at least for the latest week.

President Barack Obama declared Monday a holiday for federal workers and many state offices followed suit and were unable to provide complete data for last week's jobless claims. Data for 19 states was estimated, a Labor Department official said.

Fourteen of those states, including Texas and California, submitted their own estimates, which tend to be fairly accurate because the state officials work with a significant amount of data, the Labor Department official said.

Besides the federal holiday, there were no special factors influencing week's claims data, the department official said.

Continuing claims fell 32,000 to 3.206 million, the department said.

In a separate report, the Chicago Federal Reserve said its index of factory activity in the U.S. Midwest increased in November to 93.7 from a revised 92.2 in October.

Possible legal troubles for makers of "Blue Brees" - WAFB 9 News ...

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

A spokesman for Drew Brees says the Saints quarterback had no idea his photo is being used to market a possible synthetic drug sold in Baton Rouge. While he would not elaborate, he says Brees will take "appropriate action".

Mary Hughes says her 16-year-old son had a bad reaction from after he smoked something called "Blue Brees". She says he could barely stand up and his speech was slurred.

The Baton Rouge store that sells it, called Zombieland, has signs posted saying products like this are not for human consumption. But Assistant District Attorney John Russell says the signs are almost pointless when packaging implies something else.

"It's kind of tongue-in-cheek little humor involved to let them know, 'Hey this is not really aromatherapy, it's not incense, it's not bath salts....it's exactly what you're looking for,'" said Russell.

The tongue-in-cheek image on the product Hughes's son smoked is of a zombie-like picture of Saints quarterback Drew Brees. That in itself could land the maker in legal trouble.

"The key is that they used the name in association with the number 9 jersey. Normally, leaving NFL or any other reference off is enough. But they didn't do that here," said John Church, LSU law professor. "They added the name 'Brees', so it seems as if that's what creates the connection in the minds of the consuming public. And I think it probably is a violation."

Prosecutors say says distributors of "Blue Brees" might be violating drug laws too. While the store owner insists they sell this product to use in oil burners and not for smoking, Russell says the way Louisiana's synthetic drug laws is written could be the difference.

"They've identified large groups of the organic molecules involved. So that by outlawing one group of organic molecules, you can effectively outlaw every substance that would fall within that group which could literally be hundreds of different variations," said Russell.

One of Zombieland's owners called 9News after Wednesday's and Thursday's stories aired. He tells us:

"We would like to apologize. There was no disrespect intended by using Drew Brees. We?re fans. It wasn't meant to be a representation of him or the Saints. It was a play on words. As soon as we saw the negative feedback on the WAFB website, we took it off the shelf and will not replace it. Zombieland is an aromatherapy store. We do not condone the consumption of any kind of synthetic drugs (ex. bath salts or cannabinoids)."

Top Three Mistakes In Web Design That Companies Need To Keep ...

Microsoft president and world-famous billionaire Bill Gates once said, ?If your company is not on the online world, then your business will be out of business.? His words have proven to be true, specially since a great number of are now using the web to aid them in shopping. However, it?s important for businesses to understand that merely creating an internet based storefront is not enough ? the design of an e-commerce website is also crucial and can have an effect on sales in many ways that will not seem obvious to a lot of people. To aid business owners generate a truly useful and highly prosperous e-commerce site, listed here are the top three issues in web design that organizations need to prevent:

1) Choosing a design which doesn?t mirror the company?s image. Business people must always understand that an e-commerce website isn?t just a simple online portal where they can display and then sell their wares. The website also represents the business, and thus, must reflect the group?s image and values. The website design that companies use must at least incorporate the company?s logo and corporate colors; additionally, an ?About? page needs to be included to describe who is behind the business together with the group?s goal or plans. Creating a strong brand impact is equally as important on the web as it is in real life.

2) Selecting a style that is too complicated or too plain. Anything in excess isn?t a good thing, and this rule also applies to web design. Using lots of illustrations or photos or perhaps a tricky navigation layout can simply turn off any website viewer and make them purchase goods somewhere else. But even though it may be simpler to use a site which is rather plain, this doesn?t show that bare websites will attract more consumers. Usability is indeed a concern in creating a small business website. However, don?t forget that the more effective designs interact with several senses-sight, hearing and emotions- simply because these could also contribute to users? total satisfaction with their shopping experience.

3) Using excessive written content or too little written content. In this modern age, time is a very significant commodity, and therefore, it?s imperative that you deliver your message clearly and proficiently in a short amount of time. Online customers will certainly not be captivated by long articles on products, nor will they be bothered to find facts that?s missing in your website. Copywriters and web designers that businesses hire should know the way to proficiently strike a balance among what is inadequate content and what is way too much.

The website design Auckland companies use must at least add the company?s logo and corporate colors; moreover, an ?About? page must also be included to explain who is behind the corporation and also the group?s goal or objectives. Building a strong brand impression is equally as important on the web as it is in the real world.

(AP) ? Robert Griffin III sounds like the coach. Mike Shanahan sounds like a player.

As the Washington Redskins prepare for the winner-takes-the-division regular season finale vs. the Dallas Cowboys, rookie quarterback Griffin spoke Wednesday about treating the game like any other. He said he'll tell his teammates to not make the moment "so big that you can't grab ahold of it."

Shanahan then took to the podium and took the other approach. He said Sunday's matchup is not a "normal game." He said it's a time when players can't make mistakes and that it's the type of game that can make a career.

The Redskins are 9-6. The Cowboys are 8-7. Sunday's winner takes the NFC East, although Washington could still get a wild card berth with a loss.

The 10 most important gaming moments of 2012 | Games | Geek.com

2012 in gaming

2012 is coming to an end, and even though we still haven?t received word regarding new consoles from Sony and Microsoft, and nothing drastically changed in the realm of PC gaming hardware, a few gaming-related events still took the year by storm. From start to finish, 2012 ended up being a pretty awesome year for gamers.

Here is Geek.com?s list of the biggest developments in gaming in 2012. Some catapulted the industry forward while others showed how difficult it is for the industry to change. Regardless of their effect, each was very big news.

Double Fine Kickstarter

Double Fine Kickstarter

Before Kickstarter, indie developers had a much harder time raising funds. When Tim Schafer?s (of adventure gaming fame) Double Fine studio took to Kickstarter for an upcoming adventure game, it became (at the time) the first real video game success to hit the crowdfunding engine. It essentially started the trend of video games getting successfully crowdfunded ? and at a high monetary value ? paving the way for video game projects that ended up smashing its funding record.

Wii U

New consoles

2012 saw the release of three new consoles: The PlayStation Vita, the Nintendo 3DS, and the Wii U. Unfortunately, the Wii U was hit with a host of issues at launch, and the 3DS and PS Vita are not only struggling in the face of the rise of the phone and tablet gaming industry, but are dealing with a lackluster and relatively sparse software library. However, consoles tend to face adversity upon launch anyway, and the sooner they release, the sooner they?ll be able to prosper. Thanks largely to Nintendo, 2012 marked the beginning of the eighth console generation.

Dwarf Fortress

Museum of Modern Art officially adds video games to collection

In a move that most likely irritated Roger Ebert, MoMa added fourteen video games to its collection, officially recognizing video games as art. As for the picks, MoMa really seemed to know what it was doing, adding games as obscure as?Dwarf Fortress, ones as hardcore as?EVE Online, and old and new classics like?Pac-Man and?Portal. MoMa also announced it wasn?t stopping there, looking to acquire other classics, like Tim Schafer?s?Grim Fandango and Markus Persson?s?Minecraft. Thanks to MoMa, this is the year we could finally call games art and have a prominent art organization agree.

Quentin Tarantino's 'Django Unchained' is entertaining, but the same old schtick

'Django' shows Tarantino has perfected his game, but will the director ever move beyond his usual fare?

By Peter Rainer,?Film critic / December 25, 2012

Where would Quentin Tarantino be without pulp? All of his movies, not just ?Pulp Fiction? and ?Kill Bill? and the rest, but also the ones he wrote but did not direct, like ?Natural Born Killers? and ?True Romance,? mainline blood and guts and grunge. A better question might be: Where would Tarantino be without violence? But it?s violence of a special sort: shockingly explicit and yet not to be taken altogether seriously (even though some of us do).

Set in the pre-Civil War South, his new film, ?Django Unchained,? is like a spaghetti-western burlesque of ?Mandingo.? A bounty hunter from Germany named Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz), posing as a dentist with a giant bobbing tooth hooked to the top of his carriage, comes upon a pack of rednecks guarding a chain gang and offers to buy one of their slaves, the strapping Django (Jamie Foxx).

Since this is a Tarantino movie, they will violently refuse and violently be put down for their troubles. The tone is set: Absurdity (that giant tooth) plus bloodshed (not ketchup) plus graveyard humor (Waltz has all the best lines, and he knows it). It develops that Django, on a mission to recover Hildi (Kerry Washington), the wife from whom he was torn apart, becomes Schultz?s partner. Among other things, this means he gets to obliterate a lot of white racists as the two of them carve their way to the plantation, Candyland, where Hildi is being held. It?s a love story crossed with a buddy movie.

Instead of trying to buy Hildi outright, which might be too obvious, they pretend to be in the market for a mandingo fighter. Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio), the plantation owner, is a sniggling little tyrant, but he?s taken in by the ruse until Stephen (Samuel L. Jackson), who runs the household, sniffs it out. In a crew of mostly bad guys, Stephen is probably the worst of the worst. This is perhaps the most politically incorrect role a black man has ever played since ?The Birth of a Nation? ? and, come to think of it, white actors played black actors in that movie.

Tarantino wants to merge the high-style bloodshed of the spaghetti westerns with the racial payback of the blaxploitation movies. (Django?s name is a homage to a spaghetti western icon and Hildi?s full name is Broomhilda von Shaft.) There?s a strong dose of fantasy wish-fulfillment here, just as there was in ?Inglourious Basterds,? in which Jewish soldiers end up incinerating Hitler and his henchmen. In ?Django Unchained,? Django?s righteousness is a license to kill those who enchained him.

Successful Investing During Inflation | Penny Stocks

Investing During Inflation

Ways of Investing During Inflation

There are some mutually exclusive strategies that can be used when investing during inflation. One strategy involves ratcheting up the level of risk one is willing to chance in order to achieve the returns necessary to beat out the inflation rate. The other is to park funds in a safe place where they are not likely to be destroyed by inflation, and then wait out the storm in the realization that you are not going to make much, if anything, until the financial skies clear once again.

This dichotomy is the real inflationary trap, since many investors depend on the returns that their portfolio yields and cannot spend years without any income. Ergo, they are forced either to take risks they do not feel comfortable with, or to live off their principal, and therefore harm the future income stream upon which all of their financial plans were long ago postulated upon.

Some Suggestions for Investing During Inflation

? Inflation destroys purchasing power, which means that each dollar buys less than it did previously. Because most people cannot significantly raise the number of dollars they make, they have to economize with the ones they do have. This makes value retailers such as WalMart or Dollar General likely candidates for improved earnings and thus higher stock prices. Value priced restaurants are also good plays. McDonalds always seems to do well.

? Liquor and gambling stocks were always expected to do well in tough times, but lately they have not proven to be the reliable contrarians they once were.

? Precious metal producers tend to rise in tandem with the inflation rate, but it is not easy to sift out the real players from the old guys with a hole in the ground and big but basically unrealistic plans.

? For those who are sick of trying to beat the game, US TIPS seem to be the vehicle of choice for investors. Buyers get a very small return on their investment, but are insulated from inflation by having the bond tied to the US Consumer Price Index.

Investing during inflation can be a frustrating exercise, but it is important to keep in mind that you want to position your investments not to ride out the inflationary hurricane but to be well placed to take off once blues skies return.

Tarantino Heads South in ?Django Unchained? | Triangle Arts and ...

Django Unchained

After creating his own genre with ?Reservoir Dogs? and ?Pulp Fiction,? Quentin Tarantino has spent the majority of his filmmaking career since making all sorts of genre films that he grew up on, with ?Kill Bill,? ?Death Proof? and ?Inglorious Basterds.? Tarantino is at it again, tackling the spaghetti Western with ?Django Unchained.?

Django (Jamie Foxx) is a quiet, angry man. Separated from his wife after they try to flee the plantation they live on, he?s left walking in shackles towards whatever person wants to purchase him when Dr. King Schultz, a dentist turned bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz) frees him. Django?s saving grace is he knows the Brittle brothers, three men Schultz wants to collect the bounty on. In exchange for helping Schultz, Django is taught the tools of the bounty hunter trade, which mainly involves killing people, and together they will rescue Django?s wife from Calvin Candie, a large plantation owner.

As Candie, Leonardo DiCaprio channels all of his charisma into making the character one of the most despicable Tarantino has ever created. The man is rotten to the core. Even his teeth are black. Candie is every bit as charming as Christoph Waltz?s Hans Landa in ?Inglorious Basterds,? but lacks almost all of the viciousness, which is left to his house slave Stephen (a brilliant Samuel L. Jackson). He?s an amazing villain, but Tarantino uses him all wrong. ?Django? itself really slows down once Candie appears, as Schultz and Django go from hunting down people to sitting around tables, negotiating with the man to get Django?s wife back.

Jamie Foxx?s Django is cut from the mold of the classic Western gunslinger, almost too much so. Django is very much a blank slate on his first appearance, and as the film continues he becomes more fleshed out, but there just isn?t much to him except that he wants his wife back.

The real treat is Christoph Waltz, who won an Oscar for his performance in ?Basterds.? Tarantino may have (moreso than Jackson) found his muse, the Robert DeNiro to his Martin Scorcese. Nobody delivers Tarantino?s dialogue with the perfect mix of charm and irony like Waltz. Every film Tarantino has made since ?Kill Bill? has been very aware that its a movie, and Waltz, who is from Austria, has the perfect voice and mannerisms to personify Tarantino?s style.

?Django? has a lot of things going for it, but it?s not one of Tarantino?s finest. It?s definitely one of his bloodiest films, but at 165 minutes, its bloated and loses entirely too much momentum as things go on. Even Candie, the main villain, doesn?t appear until maybe 90 minutes into the film. Not to mention the ridiculously excessive use of the n-word, which is uttered at least 300 times. Tarantino may be trying to be authentic to the time period, but at some point it just becomes too much. In fairness, every Tarantino film I?ve seen since ?Kill Bill? has felt overlong and self-indulgent on the first viewing, so ?Django? may be much better on a second viewing for me.

It?s been fun seeing Quentin Tarantino provide his own spin on classic movie genres and making them his own. With ?Basterds? and ?Django,? it feels like he?s entering a new phase of his career, where he is purely a genre filmmaker. Hopefully he?ll try and do something entirely new and give the world another ?Pulp Fiction,? but that?s probably just wishful thinking on my part.

Tongue Rings Have Come A Long Way In The Past Two Decades ...

Tongue rings are now not only the third most popular of all piercings, but they have also become much safer to have done.

Tongue rings were once only rarely seen and people heard more often the horror stories about people who get it done. That has changed a lot over the past couple of decades. Tongue piercings have become much more common due mainly to safer standards in the piercing industry.

Where once people would actually get their tongues pierced at home by friends they now realize the importance of going to a professional who has done tongue rings before. Unlike other parts of the body that are commonly pierced, the tongue has two major veins running through it. If either of these veins is even nicked by the needle, it can cause severe blood loss.

Even when done correctly tongue rings still take two to six weeks to heal. It can take up to six months for the piercing to be fully healed. During this healing time, it is not uncommon for the tongue to swell. This is easily treated with cold drinks, sucking on ice and taking anti-inflammatory to bring the swelling down.

Also during the healing time, it is highly recommended that the pierced person refrain from alcohol, smoking, and making tongue contact with other people. Spicy food is also something to be avoided. And after doing any of the above, it is strongly suggested that they rinse their mouths with alcohol free mouthwash. Being such a warm moist environment, people who get tongue rings need to take extra care to avoid infection. They must also tighten the barbell daily to avoid it coming lose and them swallowing it.

It is commonly believed the tongue rings first got started at the Gauntlet. The Gauntlet was the first professional body piercing shop in the United States. Founder of the Gauntlet and body-piercing pioneer, Elayne Angel, is often given credit with popularizing the tongue rings.

A look at tough issues awaiting Obama's final term

As President Barack Obama approaches his second and final term, he will have to decide where to be ambitious, where to be cautious and where to buy time. A look at some of the big issues Obama will have to tackle when he returns to Washington after a Hawaiian vacation:

___

GUN CONTROL

Nothing lends an issue a sense of urgency like a harrowing tragedy that leaves the nation feeling shell-shocked. Shortly after the Dec. 14 school shooting in Connecticut, Obama said gun control would be a central issue in his second term, and named an interagency task force to recommend anti-violence legislation, with Vice President Joe Biden taking the lead. Meanwhile, pro-gun Democrats and even a few Republicans have expressed a willingness to consider new gun regulations, a shift that many have described as a "tipping point" in the age-old efforts to impose more stringent restrictions on gun ownership.

But the National Rifle Association has made clear it won't play ball. Instead of new gun laws, the NRA's chief executive officer proposed putting armed guards in every school, highlighting the sizable rift between gun-rights advocates and gun-control supporters that will complicate Obama's efforts to get something through Congress.

Obama's Democratic predecessor, President Bill Clinton, pushed an assault weapons ban through the Democratic-led Congress in 1994, prompting fierce pushback from gun-rights groups. Clinton later would credit the NRA with shifting the House majority to the GOP for the first time in 40 years, although other factors including a House bank scandal played big roles, too. The Clinton-era ban expired in 2004 and has not been renewed.

___

FISCAL CLIFF

Politicians of all stripes say Obama's first priority is to resolve the deep partisan divide over tax-and-spending issues, exemplified by repeated impasses over two years that led to this week's showdown on the "fiscal cliff." Obama and members of Congress left town for the holidays with no clear path forward to avert the combination of across-the-board spending cuts and tax increases that economists have warned could send the U.S. economy teetering back into recession.

The measures are set to take affect at the beginning of January if Congress doesn't act in the final few days of 2012, but high-stakes negotiations between Obama and House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, have devolved, with Boehner unable to show he can muster the Republican votes to support a compromise reached with Obama. "God only knows" how a deal can be reached now, Boehner declared before heading out for the holidays.

An even higher-risk conflict may arise in a few months. Congress again must either raise the federal debt ceiling by late February or early March ? or see the government default on its loans.

___

IMMIGRATION

In his first news conference after the election, Obama promised to begin work on a major immigration bill soon after his January inauguration. But with a full plate of other pressing issues, it remains to be seen how much of his attention the issue will garner. After all, immigration reform advocates have criticized Obama for failing to follow through on his promise to make immigration reform a top priority during his first term.

Obama won a big majority of Hispanic votes in both of his elections. The trend alarms Republican strategists, who fear their party won't win another presidential election until it repairs its bad relations with Latinos. That could provide an historic opportunity for Democrats, who have long sought comprehensive immigration reform, to reach a deal with Republicans even where previous bipartisan deals have flopped.

The Republican-controlled House already has taken its first steps toward showing it's ready to pursue a new way forward on immigration, voting last month to make green cards accessible to foreign students graduating from U.S. universities with advanced science and math degrees. A more sweeping bill presumably would deal not only with legal residents but also with the estimated 11 million people in the U.S. illegally ? a major sticking point in past immigration battles.

___

NATIONAL SECURITY

Not all of Obama's second-term puzzles are at home. The end to the war in Iraq and the drawdown of U.S. forces in Afghanistan present ongoing challenges, as do the civil war in Syria, political turmoil in Egypt and instability and violence in northern Mali. Also, it remains to be seen whether Republican indignation over inadequate security at the U.S. diplomatic mission in Libya where four Americans were killed on Sept. 11 will continue to vex Obama next year.

The start of the Obama's second term also means a shake-up within his Cabinet. On Friday, Obama nominated Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., to succeed Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton when she steps down early next year. Kerry's nomination is expected to easily clear the Senate, where he has served for the last six years as chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee.

It may not be smooth sailing when it comes to nominating a new military chief. Former Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., considered to be Obama's leading candidate to replace Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, is facing intense criticism on a number of fronts, including his views on Israel and Iran, and comments he made in 1998 about an openly gay nominee for an ambassadorship.
