Chinese nationals arrested at Malawi airport

Police in Malawi?s capital city have apprehended two Chinese nationals for being found in possession of ivory and attempting to externalize currency without permit , Malawi police have confirmed.

Newstime Africa understands that Shuxin Wang, 42? and Bing Tan, 46 were this week apprehended by the police at the Kamuzu International Airport in? Malawi?s capital Lilongwe ?as they about to board an Ethiopian Airways flight to Addis Ababa enroute to China.

?Yes, it is true that the police at the airport arrested two Chinese nationals during security check because they were found in possession of ivory.

?They were also found with foreign and Malawi currency and are expected to appear before the Lilongwe Magistrate court,? said the Airport police spokesperson Peter Botha.

The money that the two were found with, according to the police publicist is 31,096 US dollars and 133,100 Malawi Kwacha.

The Police also disclosed that last week a 34 year old Chinese national, Hua Chen, was also caught at the same airport in possession of 1.34 kilograms of ivory while this very week another Chinese national was arrested in Lilongwe for printing fake Malawi national team jerseys.
