Parting Schotts: Avon Old Farms defenseman Martin joining Union next season

Griffyn Martin, a senior defenseman from Avon Old Farms, has committed to Union for next season, according to U.S. Hockey Report.

Martin, a left-handed shot, is 6-foot, and 185 pounds. He is one of the team captains. USHR said Martin appears to be the top candidate to quarterback the Winged Beavers? power-play.

USHR also said of Martin: "At the Division I level, he'll be called on to play a more stay-at-home role. He's a solid defender who makes smart, simple plays. He doesn't complicate the game."

Martin is the third defenseman to join the Dutchmen next season. Jeff Taylor, a Clifton Park native who played at Albany Academy and is currently with the U.S. Hockey League's Dubuque Fighting Saints, and Matthew Krug of the Indiana Ice (USHL) will be with Union next season.

It's the second straight day a player has committed to Union. Deerfield senior forward Alex Gonye committed Tuesday.
